Green Wood Centre

Green Wood Centre Welcome to The Green Wood Centre, the national headquarters for the Small Woods Association, set in the woods of Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge.

Welcome to The Green Wood Centre, headquarters of (and managed by) the Small Woods Association. The Centre is also home to independent coffeeshop The Green Wood Café, and is a base for many community groups. Our activities at the Centre include woodland volunteering projects, fun family sessions, forest school sessions, and woody events for the whole community. Our services include the display and

sale of local wood products, volunteering (including corporate) opportunities and the hiring out of; the Woodland Hall venue and wooden camping pods. Our History:
Green Wood Trust and Small Woods Association merge:
In November 2002 the Chairman of The Green Wood Trust (GWT) approached SWA regarding the possibility of SWA taking over their organisation through a merger, (concluded in February 2005). SWA raised grant aid from Forestry Commission for GWT to employ a new Director and for GWT to become a focus for the coppice and greenwood sectors in the UK. Now GWT is part of the SWA Group it has been renamed the Green Wood Centre. It has launched a new coppice products website and is running a series of courses on all aspects of crafts and greenwood. After the merger the SWA membership office moved to the Green Wood Centre site in Ironbridge. The Small Woods Association now works in partnership with many different organisations and people throughout the UK. Why not become a member and help us in our vital work both here at The Green Wood Centre and across the UK.

Brilliant day at the Green Wood Centre today!

Our beautiful oak bench with its magnificent sweep of curves is really starting to take shape… and we’ve already had people asking if they can commission one! No pressure then 👀🪵

The best bit? Volunteers laughing, joking, enjoying the fresh air, plenty of informal chats… and of course sausages on the go 🌭🔥

Wood shavings, good company, and a belly full of sausages… what more could you want? 😆

Had an amazing day at the veterans programme in the woodlands 🌿

One of the veterans created a truly superb table—finding a naturally perfect piece of wood and shaping it into something special. Craft, creativity, and connection all in one.

It’s brilliant to see everyone enjoying the peace and quiet, spending time together, and sharing moments with friends.

Hooray for our veterans 👏💚

A few photos from this weekend’s split-hazel basketry course at the Green Wood Centre.

A big thank you to Goldwater for leading the course and passing on his expert knowledge. Supporting heritage crafts like this is a core part of what we do at Small Woods- linking woodland management with practical skills, and making sure these traditions continue to be passed on and celebrated.

We have a full course calendar to explore (link in comments)

🌿🔥 Exciting News – Bushcraft Sessions for Children! 🔥🌿

We had a fantastic meeting today with Shropshire Bushcraft by Damian and we’re really excited about what’s to come!

We’ve had lots of enquiries about activities for children aged 8–11, and we’re now looking at putting together some fun, hands-on bushcraft sessions this August.

The sessions will include:
🌱 Making hazel egg cups
🌿 Creating willow plates
🔥 Learning safe and sensible fire lighting
🌭 Enjoying hotdogs cooked over the fire (and eaten on your handmade willow plates!)

Each session will run for around 2 hours and promises to be a brilliant mix of learning, creativity, and outdoor adventure.

A huge thank you to Damian Booth from Shropshire Bushcraft for his time today — we’re really looking forward to hopefully welcoming him on board!

If you’d be interested in your child taking part, please drop a comment or message us — it really helps us shape what we offer.

🌿 What a fantastic day! 🌿

Today was the first day of our 16th Build a Bench course — and what a start!

A brilliant cohort, lots of laughter, smiles all round, and a real sense of people enjoying being outdoors together. Everyone built some excellent blodgers and even got started on their stool legs 👏

It’s days like this that really show how powerful being outside can be for our wellbeing.

Can’t wait to see what this group goes on to create! 🌱
