RNLI Cleethorpes Lifeboat station This lifeboat arrived on station in December 2012.
(1)

Cleethorpes RNLI Lifeboat Station, located on the south bank of the Humber Estuary is home to a 5m D Class IB1 inshore lifeboat "James Burgess II". It is the second lifeboat to have been gifted to the RNLI by the Burgess family of North Yorkshire, and named in memory of their son and brother, James. The volunteer crew members, shore helpers and tractor drivers are on call 24 hours a day to ensure that the lifeboat is capable of launching when the call for help comes.

Friday Night Tasking 🚨

At 19:22 this evening, Cleethorpes RNLI’s D-Class lifeboat was tasked to reports of people in the water near Cleethorpes Pier, with the flooding tide creating a risk of them becoming cut off.

A crew of four launched and conducted a search of the area alongside HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 and HM Coastguard Cleethorpes. The reported individuals were located and found to be safe and well.

Just as the crew were preparing to stand down, HM Coastguard retasked the lifeboat to the Whaleback Sandbank off Humberston Fitties, where a group of five people had become cut off by the incoming tide.

All five casualties were recovered safely and brought ashore, where they were handed into the care of HM Coastguard Cleethorpes.

The crew then returned to station, where the lifeboat was washed down, refuelled and made ready for service once again.

Remember: The tide can come in much faster than many people expect. If you’re planning a walk on the beach or sandbanks, always check tide times before setting out and carry a means of calling for help.

If you see anyone in difficulty on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Tuesday Training – Cleethorpes RNLI

Last night our D-Class lifeboat launched twice during our weekly training exercise.

The first exercise saw a crew of four launch to conduct search pattern training. During the exercise, the crew were tasked to reports of multiple people believed to be cut off by the tide near the Fitties area. Thankfully, after further investigation by HM Coastguard, all persons were accounted for and the lifeboat was stood down.

Following the return to station, a crew change took place before the second exercise launched to conduct stemming training , a key boat handling skill involving maintaining the vessel on a fixed position whilst working against the effects of tide and wind.

Beneath dramatic North Sea skies, it was a fantastic evening on the water and another valuable training session for our volunteer crew.

Congratulations to our Lifeboat Operations Manager, Andy, who has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King's Birthday Honours for services to Defence, Veterans and the RNLI.

Andy has served with the RNLI for more than 13 years in a variety of sea-going operational roles before becoming Lifeboat Operations Manager.

In addition to his RNLI role, Andy has more than 40 years continuous service in the Royal Air Force and the MOD and is also a Yeoman of the Guard.

Andy said: ‘I am very proud and humbled to be appointed to the Order of the British Empire with the award of the British Empire Medal. Throughout my entire life both in military service and volunteering I have worked with, learned from and met some amazing people, each one has moulded me and made me who I am today. I feel a very deep bond to the local and wider community and try and assist and help in my small way in any way I can and will continue to do so.’

A busy Tuesday at Cleethorpes Lifeboat Station!

Earlier in the day, our Atlantic 85 lifeboat B-942 Loving You launched as Regional Trainer Assessor Sam visited the station to conduct Tier 2 assessments.

We’re delighted to congratulate Steve Johnston and Al Roche on successfully passing their Tier 2 crew assessments. A fantastic achievement and recognition of the hard work and dedication both have put into their training.

Later that evening, our D-Class lifeboat D-889 Deanna & James Adams launched on exercise, with D-Class Helm Al taking command. Alongside trainee navigators Joe and Anna, the crew carried out navigation exercises, search patterns and boat handling training, while Adam continued developing his skills on the tiller.

The weather certainly provided plenty of variety, with sunshine, heavy rain showers, dramatic storm clouds and even a rainbow making an appearance throughout the session.

Training exercises like these are vital in ensuring our volunteer crews continue to develop and maintain the skills needed to respond when the pager sounds.

Congratulations again to Steve and Al on their successful pass-outs.

Meet Sandi Starfish!

As we head into another busy summer season, Sandi has arrived in Cleethorpes to help support a fantastic initiative aimed at preventing children and vulnerable adults from becoming separated from their families whilst enjoying our coastline.

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to Cleethorpes beach. While everyone is here to enjoy themselves, it’s surprisingly easy for children and vulnerable adults to become lost in busy crowds. When that happens, it can involve multiple agencies including HM Coastguard, Humberside Police, Beach Safety teams and the RNLI.

The Sandi Starfish initiative provides clearly identifiable meeting points along the seafront and FREE wristbands where parents and guardians can write their contact details. If a child becomes separated from their family, it helps reunite them quickly and safely.

You can collect a FREE Sandi Starfish wristband and find out more about the scheme throughout the summer.

So next time you’re passing the station, be sure to stop by and say hello to our newest recruit! ⭐

A simple idea that helps keep families safe and enjoying everything our wonderful coastline has to offer.

Sunday Morning Training 🚤

Yesterday morning, volunteer crew from RNLI Cleethorpes launched aboard D-889 Deanna & James Adams for a joint training exercise with our neighbours from Humber Lifeboat Station aboard the RNLB Pride of the Humber.

The exercise focused on towing operations and working safely alongside a larger all-weather lifeboat. Training together provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills, build confidence and strengthen the working relationships between stations that may one day be called upon to work together during a service launch.

Regular training remains vital in ensuring our volunteer crews are prepared for the wide variety of incidents we may encounter around our coastline.

A huge thank you to the crew of Pride of the Humber for joining us on the water. It was a valuable and enjoyable morning for everyone involved.

Interested in joining the RNLI family?

Our new RNLI Shop at Cleethorpes Lifeboat Station is looking for volunteer shop crew to join the team.

From welcoming visitors and supporters through the doors, to helping people find RNLI gifts and merchandise, every shift plays a part in supporting the lifesaving work of the RNLI. The shop is often one of the first connections people have with our charity, and our volunteers help turn visitors into supporters.

You don’t need previous experience — just enthusiasm, a friendly face and a willingness to be part of a fantastic team. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and support the RNLI’s mission to save every one we can.
