The Globe Book Group

The Globe Book Group Launched in 2018, we are an open group of friendly people who are book lovers. As a group, we read a wide mix of books (mostly fiction) from across all genres.

The Globe Book Group was launched in 2018 and meets at The Globe Coffee Shop, 51 Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes on the last Wednesday of each month (usually). We are a mixed gender and broad age group of friendly people who share a love of reading, enjoy talking about books and their diverse themes. This isn’t a serious, high brow group; laughter is the dominant feature of all our meetings. Add int

o this mix the fine teas and coffees on offer, not forgetting the delicious cakes, and we have all the ingredients for a great night out. It’s an opportunity to discover new authors, sample a different genre and perhaps reconnect with a book that you first read many years ago. Our book choices are randomly selected from members’ nominations. If you’d like to join us, just come along. The doors open at 7pm with a 7.30pm start. Another instalment in our occasional visits to interesting libraries around the country. This time it's the Lit and Phil in Newcastle; founded in 1793 and based in its current location, a short walk from Central Station, since 1825. As a place of learning that predates the city's universities, it describes itself as a "sanctuary for book lovers, an oasis for musicians and a realm of magic and mystery for children and the young-at-heart". Alexander Armstrong, the TV personality, has been the library's president for the last 20 years. The staff were most welcoming and allowed me to venture into the "members only" area to take some of these photos.

The final stop on our micro tour featuring libraries of note brings us to Shrewsbury, a little over an hour by train from Manchester. It is housed in the Grade 1 listed building that from 1550 to 1882 was Shrewsbury School. Thereafter it was handed over to the town and reopened as a library in 1885.

The final stage of our romp through Manchester brings us to the Portico, which was founded as a subscription library in 1820 and remains as such today. It is home to an historic collection of over 25,000 books and archives spanning over 450 years.

Our current library tour will conclude tomorrow with a visit to one beyond Manchester.

During the last week, I have had the opportunity to visit a number of impressive and historic libraries in the UK. A wonderful opportunity, not only as a bibliophile but as a photographer. Over the next few days, I will share those photos.

Today, we start with the John Rylands library in Manchester, which opened on the 1st January 1900. Built in the late-Victorian neo-gothic style, it is Enriqueta Rylands memorial to her late husband.
