Cleethorpes and District Astronomical Society

Cleethorpes and District Astronomical Society Astronomical society serving northern Lincolnshire... & beyond! Meeting first Wednesday of the month.

09/06/2026

Our final Beginners' session is this Friday starting at 7pm. The early start is because we hope to safely observe the Sun and earlier means the Sun will be a bit higher in the sky. The weather forecast is very hopeful. We will finish at 8.30. Assuming that observing takes the first half of the meeting I will finish everything off in the second half with a journey from the Big Bang to the formation of our Earth. This should bring much that we have covered together. This meeting will also bring the 2 year cycle to a conclusion. We will restart another 2 year cycle in September. Please note that the September Beginners' meeting will be a week later than normal on the 18th September. There will also be a reminder of what to look out for over the period until September as the nights start to get darker earlier.

The next Beginners' Meeting will be this Friday,10 April, at 7.30pm. We will continue with the story of how astronomers came to our modern view of the universe. The early 20th century was an exciting period in astronomy as astronomers moved from just cataloguing what they saw to actually beginning to understand what was going on. A key factor was the use of spectroscopy. We will have an inside demo but if it clears later on you will get a chance to see what star spectra look like. The scale of the universe and the Big Bang will also be covered.

Our next Main Meeting is on Wednesday 1st April when our guest speaker will be Dr Steve Barrett and his lectures are entitled "Robots on Mars" and "Spacecraft of the Solar System"

Steve Barrett is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool. His research interests have centred around the applications of imaging and spectroscopy to fields such as nanoscience, geomaterials, biomedical imaging and infrared spectroscopy. His teaching to undergraduate students has covered many topics and included supervision of astrophysics students on astronomy field trips to the Teide Observatory in Tenerife. His interest in astronomy predates his professional career as a physicist. He has visited the Society before .

On Wednesday the gates will be open as usual at 7pm and refreshments and seasonal treats will be served before and after the Meeting. giving you plenty of time to catch up with friends.

I hope you will be able to join us for a well informed and interesting evening

Happy skywatching

Our next Beginners' session will be this Friday 13th March at the usual time of 7.30pm. Our priority will be observation if the weather is suitable but we will also start looking at the history of how astronomers reached their current understanding of the Universe. This will include famous figures like Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton and how they revolutionised our view of the Universe. It will also provide an opportunity to learn a bit about comets.

Our next Beginners' session will be this Friday13th February at the usual time of 7.30pm.

Peter Rea is going to give us a beginners guide to Mercury. We are looking at Mercury now because it reaches its greatest eastern elongation on the 19th of the month. This means it will be a good opportunity to view it shortly after sunset depending on your western horizon. Either side of the 19th will also be good. You may be able to see Mercury with the naked eye but binoculars can often be helpful in finding it. HOWEVER, DO NOT USE BINOCULARS UNTIL YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE SUN HAS SET. INDEED IT IS A BAD IDEA TO EVEN LOOK FOR MERCURY WITH YOUR NAKED EYE BEFORE THE SUN HAS SET. Peter will include a couple of diagrams of Mercury in the sky, in his presentation. You can also look at Stellarium.
As usual everything else will depend on the weather. If it is cloudy I will start looking at how astronomers arrived at our modern understanding of the universe.
