Now, we wait!

The tawny owl, who arrived after being found tangled in fish pond netting, has now been given the all-clear to begin planning his release.

However, with the forecast looking rather bleak, he’ll have to wait for a suitable break in the weather. It’s important to have the very best opportunity to return home safely, get his bearings and settle back into the wild.

Not that he seems too bothered about the wait… he certainly isn’t complaining about his effortless supply of food!

That’s a whole lot of gulls being released!

They’ve all been desperately waiting for a break in the rain so we could get them back out where they belong — and finally, that break has arrived!

Many of these gulls came to us sick, injured or orphaned, so seeing them back to full health and ready to return to the wild makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Another batch of casualties successfully rehabilitated and back where they belong.

Are these two of the luckiest rabbits, or what? 🐰

An update on Dandelion and Burdock, two abandoned domestic rabbits who were brought to our rescue after being discovered in a local park.

While we don’t admit non-wildlife, most of the time we’re happy to temporarily house lost pets until their owners come forward. However, when the finder brought these two to us, our hearts dropped…

They were in terrible condition. Their nails were severely overgrown, their teeth needed immediate veterinary intervention, they were underweight, and that was just the start!

They were immediately seen by our vets and, since April, they’ve been in and out of procedures what felt like constantly, all to get them fit and healthy again.

Given their complex health needs and the condition they had arrived in, we put a poll out to our team to decide whether we should make an exception and allow them to live with us forever, or put them up for rehoming once they were stable.

The poll was unanimous.

Unsurprisingly, they’ve become the two ruling queens of the rescue…

But the story continues to get better.

If they’re going to live with us, they’re going to need their own house!

For a short period, our volunteers surrendered their summerhouse, while we got quotes from companies up and down the country to build a proper palace for Dandelion and Burdock.

Unfortunately, the company we chose, after months of delays, eventually decided they couldn’t produce their home, which left us searching once again.

However, every cloud has a silver lining, and it helped us discover JLM Wood Creations, who were more than happy to help… and even better, they’re local!

Just a few weeks later, yesterday they were here building the new palace for Dandelion and Burdock.

Their new home includes a 2 x 3 metre, dual-storey interior, with a 1.5 x 3 metre external run for getting outside during the day, plus the option for us to add tunnels and other larger extensions in the future!

A large portion of the funds used to cover their new home came from the amazing fundraising completed by The Beehive in Grimsby, and Leggs Lets, also in Grimsby.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.

There are still a few things we’ll be looking to add to their new home, but Dandelion and Burdock certainly haven’t had any complaints about their new accommodation…

Unlike the rescue manager, who is rather jealous that their new home is bigger than his office! 😆

I’m going home! 🦢

Our cygnet who ingested fishing tackle has now made a fantastic recovery and, best of all, has been able to return home — where he was quickly welcomed back into his family!

A huge thank you to the diligent team at our partner veterinary practice, Abbey Vets, for their determination and for working so hard to remove the tackle using the least invasive approach possible. Their efforts have played a huge part in allowing this cygnet to recover so quickly and return to his family.

And, of course, thank you to our volunteers for all of their continued hard work caring for him throughout his recovery.

We’re also really pleased to have received feedback from the team at Haven in Cleethorpes, who have been in contact with us about measures they’re planning to implement to help prevent further incidents like this.

Fingers crossed their response will be positive!

For this little family, though, it’s a very happy ending. 🦢❤️

PC TWINE 👮‍♂️

Yesterday, officers from Humberside Police brought us a juvenile gull they had discovered tangled in twine.

The twine was tightly wrapped around his leg, but thankfully it was able to be safely removed. He is now recovering in our care and doing well.

Thank you to the officers for bringing him to us — and, of course, for his rather unique name…

Saved from surgery in the final few seconds! 🦢❤️

Earlier, we shared the story of the cygnet rescued today from Cleethorpes Haven Holiday after swallowing fishing tackle from their pond.

Multiple attempts had been made to remove the tackle without surgery, but unfortunately, none had been successful. With no other option, the decision was made to proceed with surgery.

There was, however, a significant downside. Surgery would mean a much longer recovery, higher risk of complications, and there was a real possibility that this little cygnet may not have been able to return to his family.

But then… just before the procedure was due to go ahead, the team at Abbey Vets decided to give it one final attempt.

And somehow… it worked!

The tackle finally came loose and was safely removed — without the need for surgery!

This was absolutely fantastic news. Not only does it significantly reduce the risk of complications, but it also means the cygnet should need far less time in care before he can hopefully return to his family.

And there was another positive too, what had been estimated at nearly £900 for the surgery came down to a final bill of £391.76. We are incredibly grateful for this, especially for a Sunday emergency appointment and the care the team at Abbey Vets provided.

A huge thank you to everyone involved.

Less than 24 hours after rescuing a goose from Cleethorpes Haven Holidays after it became tangled in fishing line, we were back at the fishing pond again — this time to rescue another bird.

This time, it’s a cygnet.

The cygnet is now receiving emergency veterinary care after ingesting fishing tackle, and may require surgery to remove it. The current estimate for this emergency procedure is around £887.35.

Sadly, this site has been one of the locations we have attended most frequently for fishing-related wildlife incidents for three consecutive years.

For a small, local volunteer-run rescue, repeatedly dealing with preventable fishing tackle incidents places a significant financial and practical weight on our team. We’d certainly like to see more done at this site to prevent this, or support when it continues to happen.

While we are fortunate to receive discounted veterinary care, we have already spent a further £150.80 on veterinary treatment today.

That means we are expecting to spend more than £1,000 on veterinary care alone today — and the day isn’t over yet.

Behind every figure is an animal that has suffered, a volunteer who has responded, and a veterinary team working to give that animal another chance.

We’ve got him! 🎉

This goose has certainly not been an easy catch!

We’ve visited Cleethorpes Haven Holidays more than 15 times in an attempt to safely capture him. On some visits, we’ve even ended up leaving with other injured birds we came across while attempting to rescue him!

But finally, we’re very pleased to say… we’ve got him!

The heavily constricting fishing line has now been removed from his leg, which must have brought an immediate amount of relief to this Greylag Goose.

Thankfully, circulation to his palmate foot remains good, with encouraging signs that we’ve caught this in time before any irreversible damage occurred.

He’ll remain with us for some time while his leg recovers, but for now, the buffet is on us!

We’ve called him Goosifer, because he’s been a little devil!

This young 110g male hedgehog was admitted to us earlier this week after being discovered out in a garden during the daytime, with a small amount of flystrike present around his eyes.

After receiving some initial treatment and care with us, he has now headed over to Wild Things Rescue to continue his rehabilitation journey.

He’s certainly landed on his feet — enjoy the buffet!
