We rely on our oceans for our very survival yet we continue to use it as a place to dispose of things that we don't want, whether it is a plastic bottle or chemicals we put on our gardens and crops. It all ends up in our ocean
Often this is done inadvertently through poor waste management processes, but much of it is down to us. Human neglect and behaviour is the biggest problem and it something
that we can change - if we want to. We continue to fish at levels that are just not sustainable. Trawling methods and the resultant by-catch often results in huge areas of the seafloor being denuded of all marine life. In our lifetimes we have virtually wiped out several popular species of food fish. In Japan, the capture and brutal slaughtering of dolphins results in worldwide condemnation, yet still in continue. And millions of sharks are killed every year, at a rate that they cannot recover from, purely to satisfy the Asian appetite for shark fin soup which is primarily seen as a status symbol. We have to change our behaviour and Just One Ocean is all about change. We want to engage with people, to try to change behaviour and attitudes, not only of the general public but also large corporations, and governments. We want to provide resources that can help make those change, whether they are educational materials or a range of products that will help you to make sustainable choices. Choices that not only protect our oceans, but also generate revenue for further research, engagement and education. With this we can support targeted solutions to ensure that plastic pollution does not continue to pollute the ecosystems that we are so reliant upon, and that we use the gift of our ocean responsibly.
