The world's oldest surviving photograph was taken around 200 years ago. In the two centuries since photography has developed its own heritage and been been key to documenting history and heritage.

In 2018 The National Lottery Heritage Fund supported the MacKinnon Collection, some 14,000 historic images from the 1840s to 1940s, to be bought for the nation by National Galleries of Scotland and National Library of Scotland

Just a few weeks ago we announced that thanks to funds raised for good causes by players we were supporting National Galleries of Scotland Galleries of Scotland with £8.5million for The Art Work, a new free-to-visit home for Scotland's national art collection.

The Art Works will mean incredible resources such as the MacKinnon Collection will be more accessible to the public in future.

Thanks to players we're supporting Dundee Museum of Transport to launch a new project that will focus on getting local people involved planning how the new museum will look.

🚋❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 BREAKING: A HUGE BOOST for the Dundee Museum of Transport as work continues to transform the historic Maryfield Tram Depot!

The museum has been awarded £247,150 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop the permanent exhibition that will eventually fill its new home on Forfar Road.

The funding will help create the detailed blueprint for the exhibition, drawing on around 5,000 objects to tell Dundee’s incredible transport story across trams, road, rail, air and sea. Local communities will also have the opportunity to help shape the stories and themes featured inside.

Meanwhile, the transformation of the 125-year-old Maryfield Tram Depot is gathering pace, with roof repairs, conservation work and the creation of a new visitor entrance among the works underway with an opening still on track for 2027.

The new museum has ambitions to welcome more than 50,000 visitors in its first full year and become Europe’s first fully carbon-neutral transport museum. Another exciting step forward for one of Dundee’s biggest heritage projects!

Congratulations to Lavender Menace Q***r Books Archive as they set out on their latest project with support from players.

Lavender Menace Q***r Books Archive is announcing a £119K grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to unlock Scotland’s LGBTQ+ heritage and improve access to it for our community.

Lavender Menace Q***r Books Archive has grown out of Scotland’s first LGBTQ+ bookshops, Lavender Menace (1982–87) and West & Wilde (1987–97). Bob Orr and Sigrid Nielsen, the owners of the original Lavender Menace Bookshop, founded the Lavender Menace Q***r Books Archive in 2019 to keep this valuable LGBTQ+ book heritage alive and share it with the community. It works to create and maintain a free and welcoming community archive space for reading, research, and socialising. This funding will help to ensure that we can continue to deliver our mission, expand our reach, and build sustainability for the Archive—and, thus, preserve LGBTQ+ literature for future readers.

This new project will strengthen and share Scotland’s q***r history by expanding public access to our community archive, deepening national partnerships, and building long-term pathways for people to connect with LGBTQ+ heritage. Through a programme of outreach events, community-led research, and creative residencies, we will bring together volunteers, researchers, heritage professionals, and LGBTQ+ communities to identify shared histories, celebrate q***r literature and culture, and develop new ways for people to discover and understand this heritage. Our project will generate nationally significant resources, including a free online Finding Aid and Research Guide, a strengthened volunteer programme, and new creative interpretations of LGBTQ+ book heritage. These will ensure that Scotland’s q***r histories are visible, valued, and accessible long after the project ends.

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news for Hebrides People!

Today marks a major milestone in our journey — the full funding package for our transformational £8.25 million redevelopment has been secured.

This investment allows us to move forward with creating a new, accessible centre in Northton, a place where the people, stories, culture, and ancestry of the Hebrides will be celebrated for years to come.
