Scrappies Scrapstore

Scrappies Scrapstore Scrappies function is to collect worthwhile materials and to sort it, use it, make things with it, pass it on, or sell it. Scrappies is open to all.

The proceeds from our store are used in our work running workshops for the benefit and education of children. We also organise workshops, training sessions, birthday parties and run craft clubs. Annual members get a 20% discount in our craft shop and on priced items as well as significantly reduced prices in our scrap area. We are largely dependent on a very keen body of volunteers for virtually a

ll our day to day activities. In fact, we can only operate because a large group of people regularly volunteer to help obtain, sort and display the recycled items.

Last month we had a very interesting visit from the lovely folks of Rooftop Theatre in Ludlow who were looking for fabric and patterns for use in their upcoming play 'Who Wears The Trousers?' about Ludlow Trouser Factory. Here is their costume department hard at work making a pair of 'stunt trousers' from the fabric that they bought. Thank you for the update, we can't wait to see the final results!

If you'd like to see the play or read more about it you can find details at www.rooftoptheatre.co.uk

Scrappies are very proud to have been a part of the project, well done to all the children who created such wonderful artworks!

Come on down to the library to view the results of the My Stretton Project!

The Church Stretton Arts Festival Trustees wanted to make the Arts Festival extra special this year, as it is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Festival. This led to library staff, Friends of Church Stretton Library Scrappies Scrapstore and staff at St Lawrence Primary school agreeing to work collaboratively together on a project to celebrate their anniversary.

In June, Friends of Church Stretton Library funded workshops for each class from St Lawrence Primary School in the library. These were be run by creative practitioner Sal Tonge and include songs and poetry, to inspire the children with ideas for a piece of artwork on the theme of ‘My Church Stretton’.

That afternoon back at school, each pupil was given a fabric square and produced a piece of artwork. Some of these were sewn together to create two large wall hangings. Scrappies kindly provided the materials and also produced the final pieces of work.

From taking part in these activities, each pupil received an Arts Award Discover certificate from Trinity College London, funded by the Arts Festival. The creative workshops were essential as children have to demonstrate; knowledge of more than one type of art, and knowledge of an artist and their work, to gain their certificate.

You can see one of the hangings in the library until 9th August. The other hanging will form part of the exhibition at St Lawrence Primary School during the arts festival.

As it is the 60th anniversary, we are also inviting the public to share any memories from previous arts festivals. Simply pick up a slip from the library to share your thoughts 🙂
