It’s no-mow May! You can help wildlife by putting your feet up…

Are you taking part in No Mow May 🌼🐝

In the thick of it already? Not started yet? Don’t even have a garden? Don’t worry — there’s a way for everyone to get involved!

By simply letting grass grow, we can help wildflowers bloom and provide vital food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators 🦋

Even the smallest patch — or a shared space — can make a difference.

👉 Find out how you can join in: https://www.plantlife.org.uk/campaigns/nomowmay/

Let’s give power to the flowers this May 💚

A little reminder that metal detecting is not permitted at High Leasowes. A metal detectorist was observed at High Leasowes this morning - and does not have permission to use a metal detector there. Any reputable organization would contact The High Leasowes Trust to seek prior approval. Thank you for observing the rules relating to this hobby.

Look up this spring and summer and you might spot some of our most incredible aerial acrobats – swifts, swallows and martins!

But can you tell them apart?

👀 Swifts
Dark all over with long, curved “boomerang” wings – and almost never perch! They spend most of their lives on the wing, even sleeping and feeding in flight.

👀 Swallows
Glossy blue-black above, pale underneath, with a distinctive red throat and long forked tail. Often seen swooping low or perching on wires.

👀 House martins
Black above, bright white below, with a white rump and shorter tail. Look out for their mud nests under house eaves.

👀 Sand martins
Smaller, brown above with a white belly and a dark chest band. Usually found near water, nesting in sandy banks.

These summer visitors travel thousands of miles to be here – but sadly, their numbers are declining. Creating insect-friendly spaces and protecting nesting sites can make a real difference

If you’re walking on High Leasowes you might spot some logs with holes in. One of our keen volunteers has drilled holes in them to provide homes for solitary bees. That’s something you could do at home if you have a log in a sunny spot 🐝

A chilly but happy group of bird watchers this morning enjoyed a bird watching walk and talk with Pete Carty. Amongst the birds seen today was a pair of linnets, which are presumably nesting in our High Leasowes hedges.
