IBSL The Institute of British Sign Language is a Charity registered in England. It has an all-Deaf Board of Trustees and its management is Deaf-led.

We provide qualifications in British Sign Language for all ages and ability's.

01257 221326 / 07554 605184 (WhatsApp & video calls only) Since its formation, IBSL has maintained an ethos where it is led and managed by Deaf people. From the beginning, IBSL has relied on a heavy input by volunteers to develop its portfolio and to run the organisation. Although it now has (and is still developing) a

small staff team (which includes hearing people to administer day-to-day activities and answer telephones). IBSL was originally an idea developed by the British Deaf Association created in 2004. It needed to become independent in order to achieve awarding body status, and therefore registered with Companies House as an independent company in March 2007. Company number: 6201561. It subsequently became a Charity registered with the Charity Commission on 21 September 2015, Charity no. 1163674. IBSL (as an independent awarding organisation) was recognized and accredited by Ofqual, the Office of the Regulator for Qualifications and Examinations, in June 2009, and issued its first qualifications in April 2010. Since then, it has developed a portfolio of accredited qualifications linked to British Sign Language. It is continuing to develop this portfolio to expand into Deaf-blind Communication, Deaf Studies and Interpreting qualifications.

iBSL would like to to wish you all a Happy International Week of Deaf People!

International Week of Deaf People 2022

Every year since 2009, World Federation of the Deaf Ry (WFD) have celebrated International Week of Deaf People during the last week of September.

19 - 25 September 2022 this year sees a campaign on the theme: “Building Inclusive Communities For All” focusing on raising global awareness of issues within Deaf communities. (https://wfdeaf.org/iwdeaf2022/). Daily subthemes include Sign Language in Education, Health for All, Intersectional Deaf communities and many more!

The Institute of British Sign Language (https://ibsl.org.uk), the only Deaf-led charity to lead on BSL at its highest standard, aims to address the gap between hearing learners and Deaf communities. We want to encourage more and more learners to learn our native and unique British Sign Language by building inclusive communities together.

The trustees and staff at iBSL would like to wish all tutors, centres and learners across the world a very happy International Week of the Deaf.
