Encouraging interest in and remembering the remarkable achievements of the Company D. Founded by David Napier in 1808 during the ’Second Industrial Revolution’ the Company specialised in precision engineering. In 1834 David entered into a partnership with his son James Murdoch and were producing printing and precision machinery for mints across the world. These included precision coin weighing mac

hines and the “Naypeer” printing press. After James’ death the business passed to his son Montague Napier who started to produce Napier Motor Vehicles from the turn of the century. During WW1 Napiers self funded the development and design of its first aero engine, the ‘Lion', which became a world be**er between the wars. Other notable engines include the ‘Sabre’ used in the Hawker Typhoon & Tempest, and the “Deltic’ fitted in fast boats and for rail traction. D Napier & Son is also known for early gas turbine engine production including the ‘Gazelle’ and ‘Eland’ engines. They were also a pioneer in de-icing technology for aircraft. Another excellent video presentation from our friends at Typhoon Legacy. It's great to see true regular progress with at least one of the Typhoon flight projects.

The much anticipated start of the Sabre aspect of our project has finally taken physical form! We've started with work to disassemble the Mk VII so that we can investigate exactly what we are dealing with as far as usable components. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as this aspect of the proj...

The Napier Sabre powered Typhoon

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael S Baker on Friday October 10.

Mike joined Napier Acton as an apprentice around 1953 and after learning his trade he moved into the Deltic Service Department working under John Heley. Mike's early responsibility was installing and commissioning the Deltic 18-11B engines in the Dark Class MTB for the Royal Navy. At the end of this contract he travelled abroad working on the same vessels supplied to the Finnish and Burmese Navies.
In the 1960's he later became closely involved with the Deltic locomotives often acting as the direct technical liaison between the railway and Napiers. Mike moved with the Deltics to Paxman's in Colchester becoming a senior engineer . He was involved in installing the unique charge cooled Deltics in India's Seawards Defence vessels and 9-cylinder Deltics for the Royal Navy. His entire working career was spent with Deltics and this followed him into retirement as he helped locomotive owners keep their engines running.
Proud to be a Napierian, Mike joined the Napier Power Heritage Trust in 1990 and attended several Napier reunions. In 2013, he passed six volumes of “Record of Part Numbers Issued” for the Deltic engine which he had saved. These unique documents are now part of the Napier Archive at the I.Mech.E.

We extend our deepest condolences to Mike's family for their loss.

The Napier Nomad was one of the most complex aero engines that Napier (or indeed any other company) designed. The Nomad was effectively two engines in one so its operation is incredibly difficult to understand. However Jaco at 'Let's Go Aviate' has created an excellent YouTube video explaining (simply) how the engine worked accompanied by a comprehensive selection of images from the Trust archive.
Take a look here:

The Napier Nomad is arguably the most complex aviation engine ever built, but it is also the most fuel efficient. So, why then did it not see mass production...

Just to remind you all that the Trust does have an E-shop offering a selection of Napier related books and publications.
Of specific interest should be our collection second hand books some of which are quite rare.
We also offer complete sets and individual copies of the Napier house magazine 'This Is Napier' which provides a fascinating insight into the company and its products in the late 1950's.

This website has been created by the Napier Power Heritage Trust to give readers an insight of the Company’s heritage, its products and the applications they were used in over the past two centuries.

Inspiration comes from different places and this time it is Slovakia.
This morning I met two young men studying mechanical engineering at university. Radislav had taken a shine to the Napier Sabre engine design and Oliver was fascinated with the Napier Deltic.
Their English was excellent and so we were able to sit and discuss both engines in some depth over a coffee. Their in-depth knowledge of these Napier products was astonishing and it was inspiring to know that interest in the company continues. after all these years.
Oliver had also purchased several books from the E-shop on the Trust website so I am sure that there are lots of questions to come!
The working 3D printed Deltic was a welcome gift for me and surprisingly was an almost colour match to the original engines.

Interesting video about Serck Heat Transfer by Gary Lewis who used to work for the company. Serck manufactured radiators and intercoolers for a lot of British WWII aircraft including the Typhoon and Tempest.

Video posted on the 6th June, the 79th anniversary of D-DAY (1944 - 2023) as a tribute to the Hawker Typhoon and the pilots who flew and lost their lives fly...
