Chislehurst Commons

Chislehurst Commons 180 acres of woods, grassland, heathland and several ponds make up Chislehurst Commons. For more information visit www.chislehurstcommons.uk

It is maintained by volunteers who give up 2000 hours a year to assist the Keepers and the board of Trustees and it is also a registered charity. Since 1888, an Act of Parliament has given legal powers to a Board of Trustees to manage and protect Chislehurst Commons. The 180 acres of land are privately owned and require two full time keepers and an army of volunteers to maintain them.

IN 2025, PRICKEND POND DRIED OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIVING MEMORY

And, with the current spell of hot weather, following a very dry April, it is nearly dry again. We know that this has caused a lot of concern, and raised lots of questions, so we have put together some FAQs to try to answer some of these.

* The pond is an old gravel working that collects water when it rains. It has no feeder stream.

* The situation is the same for all similar local ponds.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO PREVENT IT DRYING OUT AGAIN?

Could water be added? When there is no rain, water is precious and has to be conserved for essential use.

* Would it help if the pond was dredged? Dredging is costly and could increase leakage through the pond base. It has not been successful in the past.
* Could water be pumped from a borehole?
Even if an underground source could be found, extraction would exceed Environment Agency limits.

Could it be lined? The pond would still be subject to evaporative water loss.

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO?
The main focus for Trustees and volunteers is getting as much water as possible into the pond when it does rain by:

● monitoring water level responses to rainfall and weather patterns.
● collecting as much rainfall as possible from higher areas of the common and surrounding roads.
● Surveying local drains to find out which need clearing out, working in conjunction with the London Borough of Bromley.
● keeping feeder ditches clear, including the main inlet ditch that traps sediments and pollutants.
However, we recognise that ultimately, with climate change, the fate of the pond will depend on the weather!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along yesterday to our Exhibition and Social Afternoon!
We had a great time meeting you all and hearing how much the common land in Chislehurst is appreciated. Many thanks also to the volunteers who helped to set up and take down, and were in attendance all afternoon. πŸ’šπŸŒ³πŸ’š

This week our volunteers cleared a ditch on St. Paul's Cray Common. It takes water from the junction of Manor Park Road and St. Paul's Cray Road and eventually flows into the drains of Holbrook Lane. If we get rainfall to follow the current dry spell, the water needs somewhere to go!

The horse chestnut tree at the top of the High Street opposite Hornbrook House car park, has been failing for some time, and sadly, it is being felled this morning. It has internal white rot, a fungal decay that causes structural weakness. Known as the Peace Tree, it was planted in 1922 to commemorate the end of the 1st World War. A tree had been planted in 1919, but did not survive, so the horse chestnut was planted in its place. We plan to plant a replacement in the autumn, but the present tree will not be felled right to the ground, and may in time, send up new shoots.

A huge thank you to the team at Champion Wines for keeping bags of bitdseed on our behalf πŸ’š This is better for the ducks at the ponds than products made from flour, which can actually harm them. All donations go towards maintaining the Commons, so getting seed from Champion Wines not only helps to keep the birds healthy, but also supports the commons!
So, this Easter break, why not pop in and collect a bag! Many thanks!

It’s spring, and the hedge at the Cricket Ground is responding! Blackthorn has spread into the gap created when Thames Water carried out major work last year, and is now covered in blossom. The section of hedge laid by two volunteers has new shoots, and the gorse provides a bright splash of yellow. A lovely sight from both sides!

The weather didn’t look all that promising when the volunteers met up for this morning's session, but it brightened up, and work on clearing the footpath from the Cockpit to Royal Parade was completed! πŸŒΏπŸ’š Some small but healthy hawthorns ahave been planted along the woodland. There is also some temporary fencing to give the woodland edges a chance to recover. An excellent job - well done, everyone! πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½
