Did you know adjacent to the Skew bridge in Westleaze is a 200+ year old aqueduct?

This structure is a heritage asset to both the canal and Swindon residents and is looked after by Swindon Borough Council.

They have appointed Griffiths as a contractor to rebuild the outer facing walls on both sides. On the far side is brickwork which is now completed and on the tow path side is Lias stone, and the council has kept it in keeping with the original work.

The work is progressing really well and will help keep this structure around to serve for many many more decades!

Branch chair Chloe Ford said"
We are really pleased Swindon Borough Council has assisted to renovate this structure, adding further more safeguarding and commitment to the canal within Swindon and beyond.
The canal is having major investment along all of its route at present and this commitment will deliver huge benefits to all.
The Environment, Economy and health benefits from a delivered canal and working tow path are huge! This is a heavily accessed site, by the community and we are super pleased with the progress"

Griffiths hopes to finish this project in the next few weeks.

On Wednesday 10th July a brilliant team from St. James's Place came to volunteer for our branch at Swindon.

They helped refurbish the recently donated racking and also maintenance at Kingshill.

Heather Scott from SJP said
"It’s so important to give something back to the community and environment, and days like this really do enhance our mental health and wellbeing.

I had some great feedback from the volunteers this morning—everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt they made a meaningful contribution to the project.

It’s incredible to see how much progress has been made since last year, particularly with the new bridge about to go in and the extension of the canal. These developments will make a real difference, both for local wildlife and for the community".

Our sincere thanks to them 👍✅🙏

Today members from the Trust joined KA75 - The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust 75th Anniversary on boat Hannah from Bradford-Upon-Avon to our connecting junction at Semington.
The K&A Trust is celebrating 75 wonderful years and we look forward to celebrating 50 years next year!
The trip was fantastic and we celebrated the occasion with an amazing cake! 🍰

Part of our 2050 vision is to create the Melksham Link, joining to the K&A and routing up to the Avon at Melksham before heading onwards to Lacock and beyond!
This is happening now and this wonderful connection to such a beautiful canal gives us real inspiration to reach our goals and deliver the fantastic benefits we see on the K&A.

Volunteers, local residents and visitors are warmly invited to gather at the historic canal junction at Semington on Monday 15 June at 11:30am to witness a special moment in Wiltshire’s rich waterways heritage.

Volunteers from the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust will be hosting a celebratory pause as the narrowboat Hannah, carrying members of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust, cruises eastward through Semington as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations. The event will include a friendly “salute” between the two canal trusts, marking a shared commitment to preserving and restoring the region’s historic waterways.

No booking is required - just come along and be part of this unique local celebration.

The new proposed route of the Wilts & Berks canal will connect further west than the original line forming the Melksham Link. A significant programme being delivered by the Trust in collaboration with Wiltshire County council and supporters. The route can be found here: https://wbct.org.uk/map/

Help Protect The Wilts & Berks Canal at Chippenham

We have just received information that developers are looking to build around 1200 houses on land to the north and north-west of Pewsham Locks at Chippenham. As a charity The Trust is always neutral on these matters however we do look to protect our interests i.e. the protection of the original canal line and the restoration of the canal.
The developers talk about Biodiversity and Sustainability and Nature however not once do they mention The Wilts & Berks Canal, despite the fact that the suggested development cuts across line of the canal.
The consultation document can be found at https://www.pewshamchippenham.co.uk/
They are asking for feedback and The Trust, and myself, would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete this stating that if the development does go ahead then the canal should be included in their development plan. Some of the things you may consider are:
• Preserving local heritage.
• Boosting tourism and the local economy
• Creating recreational opportunities e.g. walking and cycling routes, boating opportunities, nature observations
• Supporting Wildlife and Biodiversity: Canals can act as wildlife corridors, linking habitats and providing homes for birds, insects, fish and aquatic plants. Restoration plans include biodiversity management and aim for habitat enhancement and biodiversity net gain.
• Educational Benefits: The canal provides opportunities for learning about Local History, Industrial Archaeology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Conservation.
• Community Pride and Volunteering: The restoration project has involved hundreds of volunteers over many years. Continued restoration strengthens community involvement, develops practical skills and gives residents a shared goal that improves the local area. Recent work at Pewsham Locks demonstrates the commitment of local volunteers.
If you value your local canal and wish to see it continue to thrive and develop for all the community then please ensure you have your say.
The feedback form can be found at the ‘Next Stages and Feedback’ tab at the above link. Deadline for feedback is 28th June.
Thank You.
Howard Wilson (Melksham, Chippenham and Calne branch Chairman)
