We led a wonderful bat walk last night in Monkton Park - LOADs of bats and brilliant company from everyone who attended. Thank you for all the questions and enthusiasm, especially the knowledgeable kids!

We saw lots and lots of Pipistrelle bats, with brief visits from Noctule and Serotine bats too.

Our next bat walk at Pewsham Locks is fully booked, but our final bat walk of the year in October will be available to book from Wednesday 9th, more info here https://rootedchippenham.org/community-bat-walks

Beautiful sunny meet up today ☀️🌻💚
Lots of familiar faces and some new!

Another 2,000L of IBCs installed to harvest the winter rains. This takes us to over 6,000L of rain water storage on site making us ready and much more resistant to future droughts.

A mindful sensory session harvesting lavender, sunflowers and warm cherry tomatoes. Delicious bruschetta with our cuppas. Plenty of seeds saved for sowing next year as well as winter snacks for our flying friends. And aromatic bunches of dried lavender available after the film this afternoon for anyone who’d like one.

Don’t forget Zero Chippenham’s free viewing of the People’s emergency briefing film - 4pm this afternoon at Hardenhuish school. Tickets available here

If you've been down to Lords Mead Community Orchard recently you might have spotted that the grass surrounding the trees has had a bit of a trim!

This was thanks to the advice of local naturalist Julie Wheeler and the wonderful team at Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, who brought their tractor, mower and meadow management skills to help us out.

Julie explains in our latest blog how we're restoring the grassland habitat, and why this is so important with this key habitat under severe threat in the UK.

Last week we had a helping hand from local volunteers to cut the grassland in Lords Mead Community Orchard, to allow the good plant species to flourish.

We've just installed a hot composter at the community garden and it is very exciting!

Read our superb blog by Rooted Chippenham volunteer Erica Bradbury all about it - discover what hot composting is, how it works and how to get a subsidised hot compost bin yourself.

There is even a downloadable PDF guide to help you on your own hot composting journey!

Last week we started down an exciting new path in our composting journey when we set up our new Green Johanna hot composter, alongside our existing cold composting bays.

Water is precious, and with this prolonged spell of dry weather we're all having to make some difficult choices.

At the garden, we're prioritising the trees and plants that have the best chance of thriving. Some annuals and less established plants may not make it – and that's okay. Gardening means working with nature, not against it.

Brown lawns might not look their best, but they're tougher than they appear and will bounce back when the rain returns. There's no need to keep them green at the expense of precious water.

Every drop saved now helps protect the things that will benefit wildlife and our community for years to come. 💚

Have a look at the tips in the link below for simple ways we can all save water at home.

We need your help to avoid a hosepipe ban. Demand for water is currently more than 30% higher than normal due to the ongoing hot, dry weather.

While we're fixing more leaks and there is still enough water available, it's being used faster than our underground reservoirs can be replenished.

It's been 50 years since water restrictions were last needed in our region, and we're doing everything we can to keep it that way.

By making small changes where possible, we can help keep water flowing for each other and the environment as well as reduce the likelihood of more formal restrictions as the dry conditions continue.

Food is so much more than fuel. 🌱 It's a way to connect with nature, our communities, and each other.

In our latest blog, we explore why food education matters, not just for helping children understand where their food comes from, but for inspiring curiosity, healthier lifestyles, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

It was inspired by Vanessa being interviewed on BBC Wiltshire Radio about the shocking statistics that one in three children don't know that bananas grow on trees, and one in five think fruit and veg are only available from shops.

If we want future generations to value healthy food and a thriving environment, we need to give them opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

💚 We'd love to hear your thoughts. How did you first learn about growing or cooking food? Share your story in the comments!

One in three children don’t know that bananas grow on trees, 2 in 5 that potatoes grow underground and 1 in 5 think fruit and vegetables are nothing to do with farms and are only available from shops. These terrifying statistics were recently collated by Hello Fresh.

📢 A special community screening: The People’s Emergency Briefing

What’s happening with climate and nature, and what does it mean for everyday life in the UK?

Join us for a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing - an eye-opening 50-minute film bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence and why it matters for things like:

🌧️ Extreme weather
🍞 Food security
🏥 Health
💷 Cost of living

The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and a range of voices from across the UK.

After the film there will be an open discussion about what it means for our community and what we can do next, and a chance to chat more over some refreshments.

Bring a friend, neighbour or family member: everyone is welcome (although please note the advisory age is 16+)

Our MP, Sarah Gibson, will be alongside constituents to watch and reflect.

Seats are free. Book here in advance if you can, but if you can't just come along on the day. You can also let us know you're coming or raise any queries by emailing: [email protected]
