After some slight delays due to the great British weather ☔️, it is great to see the building works at The Reading Room complete (well very nearly, just a new rail to go up alongside the ramp)! ✔️

Thank you to RedHill Construction for doing such a brilliant job; keeping the site so clean and causing minimal disruption to our hirers and the villagers! 🤩🧱

So far this year we have repainted the entire hall (inside and out), replaced the accessibility ramp to the hall and restored the front wall and pillar. Just our new front doors to go! 🚪

Giving The Reading Room a new lease of life to ensure it is there for use by the local community for many more years to come is the most important thing for the committee! 😃

⚠️ Upcoming Works at The Reading Room ⚠️

We are delighted to notify you of our continued works at The Reading Room to preserve, maintain and improve our wonderful facility for the village.

This post is to inform you of upcoming works which will be undertaken by RedHill Construction and are scheduled to commence shortly! 🧱🔨👷🏼

Commencing on Monday 23rd September for just under 3 weeks, we will be restoring the front wall that surrounds The Reading Room and improving / relaying the ramp access which takes visitors to the rear of the hall (without the need for using the steps at the front of the building).

In addition, we will be replacing the main front doors with bespoke doors to match those in existence but with the aim of providing better security for The Reading Room with new locking mechanisms.

We are really looking forward to seeing the hall continue to flourish in the community! 💚

The History of The Reading Room

The Reading Room was built in 1878 by the church and local philanthropists.

The Reading Room was built with the objective of helping the local parish's men with literacy – and as an alternative to the pub.

Hundreds of Reading Rooms sprung up around the country in Victorian times.

Chinnor's Reading Room is one of over 50 that survive today as a Village Hall.
