Some people like to feed red kites meat in their gardens to attract large numbers – the birds make dramatic swoops when they feed. While this is an impressive spectacle, The Chilterns Conservation Board discourages feeding red kites.
Here are some of the reasons why:

• Feeding encourages red kites to become bolder than they naturally would be and to fly too close for comfort. They have sharp claws and a wingspan of around six foot. If the birds become a nuisance this could change public support for the welfare of these birds, perhaps leading us back down the road towards the persecution of red kites – part of the worrying history of these birds.

• Feeding encourages concentrated numbers of kites in one area. This discourages songbirds and ground nesting birds from feeding and successfully bringing up their young.

• The scraps of uncooked and cooked meat that people feed red kites don’t present a balanced, healthy diet.

• Red kites can drop scraps of meat onto neighbouring gardens and properties which is a health risk and attracts rats and vermin (the Conservation Board has even received complaints about scraps of meat dropping directly onto people’s heads!).

• Feeding discourages red kites from expanding their range and looking for new breeding territories and sources of food. This disrupts their natural population spread.

• Red kites can feed and thrive successfully in their natural habitat without our assistance. People were encouraged to feed them during their reintroduction in the 1990s, but now that this species is doing well, feeding is no longer necessary.

So please don’t feed the red kites – it’s far better to enjoy them soaring high above our gardens or in their natural environment on a walk in the Chilterns hills.

Our Councillors and MP are also keen to ensure that the Risborough Expansion Area doesn’t expand further than already planned and that Risborough, Longwick and Kimble do not get subsumed. The more support the community and residents can give them the better.
Only a few days left on this site consultation. Please have your say.

8750 New Houses for Risborough.
COULD RISBOROUGH BE BUCKS’ ‘NEW TOWN’?

Buckinghamshire Council are consulting on their new draft Local Plan. We are surprised that Risborough could be allocated up to 8750 new homes that would merge it with a further expanded Longwick, Little Kimble and consume Askett and Alscot, effectively creating a large ‘new town’ between Aylesbury and High Wycombe. There is no feasible plan for, and there seems little possibility of funding, the necessary infrastructure for this massive expansion.

Although only an indicative map: the red outlined bits are sites that have been assessed and discounted from development; the green areas are the areas that were allocated in 2017 as part of the Wycombe District Area Local Plan (new business and approx.2500 homes although, for various reasons, have not managed to be built out yet); and the blue areas are possible newly identified sites now being assessed for future housing allocation.

All of these suggested sites are greenfield farm land (just out of the green belt and Chilterns AONB).

Do you think this would be appropriate for Risborough?

It is critical that as many residents as possible have their say on this. Buckinghamshire Council is holding a short consultation period running until 16th March - Please take a look at the consultation documents and have your say:

RARA would welcome the opportunity to work with our unitary Councillors ( area conservatives), Princes Risborough Town Counciland our MP Greg Smith (Greg Smith MP); to help inform and support attempts to mitigate any negative impacts of any expansion, not least one that could be of this scale; and to support the need for adequate and suitable infrastructure, if and where needed. The local community and residents' views are essential. We do though desperately need new committee members to be able to legitimately act as a residents group. If you are passionate about the Risborough area, the countryside, planning, housing, or road building, health services, schools etc etc then please do message us.

Residents in Princes Risborough are calling for bollards opposite the Bird in Hand to be removed.

The petition lodged with Buckinghamshire Council asks the authority to remove the “new bollards” from the grass verge opposite the pub on Station Road.

It also asks that the verge be made into a “much needed” official parking area to resolve parking issues faced by residents and customers of the pub.

The petition says: “We the undersigned petition the council to remove the new bollards on the grass verge opposite the Bird in Hand to allow for much needed parking overspill.

“We would also like this area, grass verge, to be an official parking area to resolve the parking issues the residents and the customers of the pub currently have.

“These newly installed bollards have only caused more issues of people parking on curbs and blocking roads. We need this area for extra parking and would like to discuss the options for a solution as a community.”
