Sussex Heritage Trust is a charity established to preserve, improve and encourage the appreciation of the architectural and natural landscape of Sussex.

The Sussex Heritage Trust runs an annual awards, which are designed to recognise and reward high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects and encourage the use of traditional skills and crafts. There are eight categories of Awards : The Large Scale Residential Award, Small Scale Residential Award, Commercial Award, Landscape & Gardens Award, Ecclesiastical Building

Award, Building Crafts Award, Public & Community Award and The Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award. Each winner receives a hand crafted plaque to be attached to the building. The Awards will be presented by The Rt Hon Lord Egremont DL at Pangdean Old Barn, London Road, Pyecombe on Thursday 9th July.

🏆 What a month it’s been!

Throughout May, our 10 amazing teams of Sussex Heritage Trust Awards judges have been travelling across Sussex visiting and reviewing all **85 Awards entries** for 2026. This week the South Downs National Park have undertaken their Award reviews as well. We love this picture of ‘Team 7’ at the top of Hesrstmonceux castle!

They’ve all explored some truly inspiring places, met passionate project teams and seen first-hand the incredible restoration, conservation and design work taking place across our county.

Now we’re getting ready for the big reveal...

As part of our Taster Day Programme, we invited students from and to an incredible ornamental plasterwork course at the stunning Herstmonceux Castle. Led by master craftsperson , the course gave the students the opportunity to develop traditional plastering skills, explore decorative techniques and learn from one of the industry’s finest in a truly inspiring setting.

Ever wondered how historic buildings are brought back to life? 🏰

This incredible 16th-century tower — standing alone in the Sussex marshland — is currently undergoing careful restoration using traditional techniques to protect it for future generations.

At the Sussex Heritage Trust Taster Day, young people are stepping into the past to build their future—learning traditional crafts like brick making, lime mortaring, flint knapping and walling, wooden shingle making, and more from real industry experts.

It’s all about keeping heritage alive while opening doors to exciting careers in construction and conservation. 🏛️
