Step 7 Establishing 4K clubs - Feeding Futures highly encourages community empowerment through forming development partnerships to avoid donor dependency. Among the partners are schools with a 4K Club (an initiative supported by the president of Kenya) where we provided equipment to establish a 4K club and train conservation agriculture method, tree growing and life skills to primary school club members.

Step 6 Tree nursery - In response to climate change adaptation and mitigation, Feeding Futures together with the local community in Subukia Sub-County established a tree nursery. With the support of the local chief, we have grown 24,000 trees. We distributed two seedlings to every child in four local schools. Step 3 Building the kitchen.

When the community has demonstrated a commitment to the partnership, FF install guttering and water tanks on the classrooms to harvest the rain. The water is then used for meal preparation. We then move on to design and build a kitchen and storeroom. We purchase a silo to store the grain and fill it when the maize is at the best cost.

Step 2 Initiating the partnership

The school community demonstrates its commitment to the partnership by parents and other members of the community, attending FF practical ‘farming’ training sessions. Conservation farming theory and methods are critical to the success of soil improvement that increases crop yields, fights climate change, and encourages a diverse diet. This improves the health of all, children can learn better and opportunities for increased income become available.

STEP 1 Actually this is the picture that should go with FF talks to a group of community leaders and with their permission, a primary school community is invited to build a partnership based on trust. With them, we talk through the assets that can contribute to the partnership and we share what FF can provide. The aim is for the community to eventually take ownership for providing cooked school meals to every child in the primary school.
