Black History Month is about celebrating our history, recognising the people who have helped shape our communities, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

On Thursday 29 October, we’ll be joining partners across Derbyshire for a special Black History Month Celebration at Derbyshire County Council Offices in Matlock.
We’re especially proud that the event will welcome people who made history within our local emergency services, including the first Black firefighter to serve with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service in the early 1980s, alongside one of the first Black police constables serving during the same period.

The day will also explore:
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
• Positive action
• Community engagement
• Recruitment and opportunities
• Support networks

Thursday 29 October 2026 | 10am – 2pm
📍 Derbyshire County Council Offices, Matlock
🎟 Open to all

ACCA will be there alongside The Race Network at Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, Links CVS Chesterfield and Derbyshire Constabulary.

Come along, hear the stories, meet the organisations involved and be part of celebrating Black history here in Derbyshire.

A special moment in Chesterfield’s history. 💙

On Friday 16 October, ACCA will be joining the Spencer family and members of our community for the unveiling of a Blue Plaque recognising the contribution of the Spencer family to Chesterfield’s Black community.

The plaque will honour the legacy of Wilson and Vericka Spencer, members of the Windrush generation whose lives and contribution form an important part of our town’s history.

We are honoured that the occasion will be attended by guests including Don Spencer, Katie Spencer, daughter of the Spencer family, The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, and Roger McKenzie.

Friday 16 October 2026 | Blue Plaque unveiling – 2pm

The unveiling will be followed by a reception at:
3pm | Committee Room 1, Chesterfield Town Hall

Light refreshments will be available.

This is about more than a plaque. It is about recognising the people who helped shape our community, preserving their stories and making sure their contribution is remembered by future generations.

We hope you will join us for this important occasion. đź’™

Do you know what support Ashgate Hospice can actually offer you and your family?

We are joining with Ashgate Hospice for an afternoon of conversation, information and community.

It’s a chance to find out more about the support and services available through Ashgate Hospice, while Ashgate will also have the opportunity to learn more about ACCA, the work we do and the communities we support.

We also want this event to create space for honest conversation.

People from Black African and Caribbean communities can be under represented in conversations around hospice and palliative care, so we want to make sure those voices are part of the discussion.

Come along to:

đź’ś learn more about Ashgate Hospice and the support available
đź’ś hear more about ACCA and the work we do within our community
đź’ś ask questions in an informal and welcoming environment
đź’ś talk openly about perceptions or concerns around hospice care
đź’ś share what could make services feel more accessible
đź’ś make sure Black African and Caribbean voices are heard

Everyone is welcome to attend and as an African Caribbean community charity, we particularly encourage members of our Black African and Caribbean communities to come along, join the conversation and share their views.

There will also be an opportunity to enjoy Caribbean food together.

Tuesday 20 October 2026 | 4pm–6pm
📍 Ashgate Hospice

Free to attend.
