The reapperance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson

As someone who loved A good girls guide to murder and Five Survive I had high hopes for this latest offering from YA writer extraordinaire Holly Jackson.

Rachel Price disappeared 16 years ago leaving 2 year old Bel on the backseat of her car with the headlights on and the engine running. Rachel dispeared without a trace with no indication as to where she had gone or what had happened to her. Since then, the conspiracy theroists have gone wild and every avenue has been explored but no one has a clear idea what happened all those years ago. Bel is now 18 and a film crew have been invited into her home to interview her and her family to hear their reactions so many years on and how they have managed to cobble together a life without Rachel in it.
One day this is all turned on its head and Bel is left trying to find the answers everyone else is trying hide or trying to forget about.

Told in third person the book focuses on Bel and her reaction to everythjng that happens in the book (trying not to give away any spoilers!) In Jacksons trademark style details are slowly drip fed to the reader as we, like Bel, try to piece together what is real and what is not.

Bel, in my opinion, is a brash and sharp tongued character - no doubt as a way for her to stop people getting too close to her as she is so distrustful of others. She is bright but doesnt like to give too much away but also likes to pile the tension high without really caring who she might hurt on the way. She is a contrast to golden girl Carter, her cousin - always the confidiant and being mollicodled by her over protective (and pushy) parents. These two drive the story (as well as a few others that I won't mention due to their pivitol nature as part of the plot).

I will be completely honest and say that I devoured this in two days due to its fast paced nature and the cliffhanger at the end of nearly every chapter. Jackson is could at a plot twist and I audibly gasped a few times when new information came from left field.

I was a little scared that this book wouldn't live up to the hype but thankfully this one knocked it out of the park.

I recommend this to anyone that loves an edge-of-your-seat thriller but, due to the language, I would say it is suitable for 14+ years.

Letters to the lost by Brigid Kermerer

It starts with a letter left on a grave read by someone who is still trying to work out who he is and what he wants from life.

It continues with a reply and emotion from the girl who wrote the original letter who is trying to deal with the present but is lost in the past.

Two lives that become instantly tangled with truth and lies being so close that the line becomes almost blurry and neither person knows what they need, want or whether the truth really will solves all their problems...

This is a beauitful coming of age story told from two different points of view where you fall in love with both characters but also audibly gasp when little snippets of their past is revealed. The plot is delicately woven and brilliantly written.

Considering how much of a fan I am of Brigid Kermerers A vow so bold and deadly series I was unsure of how something that is much more real might be handled. I shouldn't have worried as it is just as good!

Perfect for someone who wants a lot of emotion, a bit of electricity but a book about finding oneself rather than romance.

For readers 12+

Paper Dragons: The fight for the hidden realm by Siobhan McDermott

It always makes me smile when I get a book recommendation from my daughter as I know it will be a good one (as she has amazing taste!) This particularly book is gorgeous to look at (designed by Yuzhen Cai) and we have the edition with beautiful sprayed edges.

The story follows a girl called Zhi Ging who is twelve years old and desperately wants to become a silhouette and get an invitation to study at the mysterious Hok Wan and not only get the chance to finally fit.in but also to fibd out who she really is and where she came from. Along the way she has many demons to fight in the shape of fellow students, magical challenges and shadows from the past that try to catch up with her and threaten the whole of Hok Wan. It is up to her (and a cast of amazing sidekicks) to try and undercover what is going on (and also find time to do her homework!)

This book is world building perfection (which is only found in the greatest of fantasies written for a MG audience). All the providences have their own unique identities and are so vivid that you might stumble upon them on your next adventure.

The characters are believable and relatable (and you become attatched to them without even realising!) My favourite though has to be Malo (and his obsessive need for sunflower seeds wherever he is)... with Gahyau and Pou Pou in a very close second... I now really want my own jellyfish!

I need to also mention the food: I will now be living on all of the dishes that are eaten in the book as they sound delicious and I hope the author will be sharing how to make some of them in the future (please?!)

This book is great for anyone that loves an adventure story with fast paced, nail biting moments (with some major plot twists that will make you gasp!).

Big warning: this is the first in the series with the second one due to be published in February 2025 (I cannot wait).

NEW REVIEW:

Emmett by LC Rosen

Emmett has all the luxuries in life. Not only does he attend a good school but he has friends, is popular and he is the one person that everybody turns to to make something perfect. He know how to say the nice thing and how he is viewed by others too. He is a healthy teenager who is gay and proud. And he wants people to be happy. After setting up his best friend with the love of her life, he decides to branch out and try and help other people find their happy ending. But does Emmett know what he really wants? And how to create the perfect Fairytale ending that he wants?

This story is a brand new retelling and up-to-date version of the Jane Austen classic, Emma. It takes all the gregarious traits of the well-known heroine and places them in the fancy part of LA, where money is no object and where hedonistic lifestyles are just a part of everyday life. This new adaptation really works as the author has cleverly played with Emma's traits, her friends but also kept the overprotective father, who is concerned about his son going off to college after the summer.

This book has some laugh out loud moments That will also make you cry. The character's a lovable believable but also very of the moment.

Due to the nature of some of the more intimate scenes in the book, this book would not be suitable for anyone younger than 16. The issues are cutting but also relevant. This book is highly enjoyable and is well worth a read.

March has been a crazy month with lots of travel and time away from home... but I have still managed to find a bit of time to read... my favourite read this month has to be A calamity of Mannerings written by Joanna Nadin which is a mix of Laura Wood, the great gatsby and the Mitfords... light hearted with very real implications which a dollop of catastrophic and crazy animals thrown in - an absolute joy!

Stink: Fairy vs Wizard by Jenny McLauchlan

The fairy with his bundle of tricks and pranks is back and this time with even more high jinx and tight scrapes than ever before! Stink tries to help Danny for his part in the school play but accidentally unleashes a powerful wizard and neither of them quite know what to do to put it right!

My daughter is a HUGE fan of Stink and his antics. She loves that the books are highly illustrated but also have so many laugh out loud moments. The story is pacey and fun and very relatable (and my daughter wishes she had a fairy too!)

This is a great book for those that love a funny book with big characters. For fans of wimpy kid and Tom Gates. Age 9+ published by Farshore Books
