We’ve accepted less for dementia for too long.

Because for decades, people affected by dementia have faced long waits, patchy support and limited access to treatment.

We've accepted a standard of care that wouldn’t be tolerated for many other serious health conditions.

People are waiting months, or even years, for a diagnosis and often, when they get it, they are handed a leaflet and ushered out the door.

Enough is enough.

We know what good diagnosis looks like. We know what people need, and we know change is possible.

So, we’re calling for a new ‘national standard’ for dementia diagnosis. Meaning that after being referred by their GP, everyone with dementia receives a diagnosis, a care plan, and, where appropriate, begins treatment - all within 18 weeks.

Sundowning can make late afternoons and evenings really tough for people living with dementia. As the day winds down, confusion or agitation can rise - sometimes because of something that happened earlier, sometimes because a need isn’t being met. Gentle reassurance, distraction, and familiar memories can help bring them back to a calmer place.

Here are 3 tips to help you navigate a loved one experiencing sundowning:

1. Sometimes what seems like ‘sundowning’ could be the person trying to communicate a need. This could be needing the toilet, feeling hungry or being in pain.

2. Uneven indoor lighting and reflective surfaces can sometimes cause confusion by creating disturbing shadows or mirrors. Close the curtains or blinds once it starts to get dark and cover the television with a dust cover, if it’s not being used.

3. If they seem unsettled, think about whether something earlier in the day may have affected them. Try calming them with distraction - like talking about a favourite memory. If they stay agitated, they may have an unmet need.

If you’re supporting someone through this, you’re doing an incredible job. 💙

Bank Holidays are often a good time to rest, relax and enjoy time with loved ones.

Something as simple as a shared cup of tea, a local walk or an afternoon together at home can mean a lot to someone who is affected by dementia, whether they are living with the condition or caring for someone who is.

Hi there….Hooley here! I can’t quite believe it’s September tomorrow. I’ve had a wonderful summer of holidays in the sun and today I’ve got my scarf on BBBRRRRR. Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun.
