To celebrate 120 years of school meals and National School Meals Week we are looking for 120 special school caterers to feature in our NSMW 120 Gallery! 🎉

We want to celebrate the chefs, caterers, kitchen teams and school food heroes who work tirelessly to feed children every day.

Make a difference this VIP Day!

As part of National School Meals Week 2026 (9–13 November), we're encouraging schools to invite their local MP or council dignitaries to experience the fantastic work happening in school kitchens and dining rooms every day!

VIP Day is your chance to showcase the incredible work of school catering teams, highlight the importance of nutritious school meals and help decision-makers understand the positive impact they have on children's health, wellbeing and education.

We've made it easy to get involved!

Celebrating 120 Years of School Meals!

2026 marks a major milestone for school food as we celebrate 120 years of school meals, supporting children's health, wellbeing and education since 1906!

Join us for National School Meals Week (9–13 November 2026) as we celebrate the incredible work of school caterers and the vital role school meals play in children's lives.

We’re delighted to welcome Erin Ward as our new School Chef of the Year Coordinator!

Erin will take on the role from next year, supporting the delivery of The School Food People’s School Chef of the Year (SCOTY) competition 2028.

Erin follows in the footsteps of Carol Harwood, who has provided outstanding support, dedication and commitment to the competition over many years. We would like to say a huge thank you to Carol for everything she has contributed to making SCOTY such a successful and valued competition.

We’re looking forward to working with Erin as we continue to celebrate the incredible talent and passion of school chefs across the country.

Brad Pearce, chair of The School Food People, recently attended the Foundation for Education Development (FED) consultation at Windsor Castle, joining leaders and experts from across education, school food, research and policy.

The two-day event explored how nutritious, appealing and accessible school food can support children's attendance, wellbeing, learning and inclusion.

Brad highlighted the importance of looking beyond nutritional standards to consider the whole school food experience, including what children want to eat, the dining environment and the practical challenges facing schools and catering teams.

The discussions will help inform FED's forthcoming Futures Nutritional Inclusion report, due to be published in Spring 2027.

The School Food People’s Harvest Festival Wheatsheaf Loaf Challenge is back – and we want to see what your pupils can create!

In partnership with McDougalls, we’re challenging primary and secondary school pupils to put their own creative spin on a traditional Wheatsheaf Loaf.

🏆 3 x £500 prizes to spend on equipment for your school kitchen or Food Technology room
👩‍🍳 Pupils can be supported by school caterers or Food Tech teachers
🌾 Create your loaf, take a photo and tell us in 100 words or less how it was used to celebrate Harvest Festival

Could you help us find the next School Chef of the Year? 👨‍🍳

The School Food People is looking for a passionate member colleague to take on the voluntary role of Coordinator, helping to deliver one of the school food industry’s most prestigious competitions.

Now in its third decade, School Chef of the Year (SCOTY) celebrates the incredible talent, creativity and dedication of school chefs across the country.

We’re looking for someone with a genuine passion for school food, ideally with previous SCOTY experience, to help:

🏆 Coordinate and support regional heats and the national final

👩‍🍳 Mentor and encourage competitors throughout their SCOTY journey

📋 Support judging, competition rules and guidance

The role involves approximately 15 days across the competition programme, with travel, accommodation and meal expenses covered.

🍽️ We’re excited to be heading to the East & West Midlands Regional All-Day Event on Thursday 8th October!

Step Up to the Plate – The School Food Mix-Up is coming to the Midlands tomorrow, bringing together school food professionals to mix ideas, share solutions and shape the future of school food.

📅 Thursday 8 October 2026
⏰ 9.15am–3.30pm

The day will focus on two important topics:
🥗 The new School Food Standards
⚖️ Benedict’s Law

Plus, enjoy a hot lunch provided by MKN and RATIONAL, meet a fantastic line-up of exhibitors and connect with colleagues from across the sector.

🎟️ There’ll also be a charity prize draw supporting Acorns Children’s Hospice and Dementia UK, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs!

📍 Easily accessible from the M6 Junction 11 and M6 Toll Road, with on-site parking.
