📢 Big changes to workers’ rights – what does this mean for your money?
The new Employment Rights Act has been described as the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation. But what does that actually mean day to day?

In simple terms, these changes aim to give people:
✅ More secure work (including better protections around zero-hours contracts)
✅ Improved sick pay and family leave rights from day one
✅ Stronger protection against unfair dismissal
✅ More predictable income and working hours
All of this can have a real impact on financial wellbeing – helping people plan ahead, manage bills, and feel more secure in their income.

A new review into access to face‑to‑face banking in the UK has been welcomed by MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis, who has stressed the importance of protecting in-person services for those who need them most.
With bank branch closures continuing across the country, the review will look at the real impact on communities – particularly older people, vulnerable households, and those who may struggle with digital banking.
Being able to speak to someone in person helps many people stay in control of their finances and access essential services.
This review is an important step in understanding where gaps exist and ensuring no one is left behind as banking continues to change.

📢 New research highlights a strong case for simplifying council tax support
A new report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies is calling for Council Tax Support to be brought into Universal Credit – and it could make a real difference for low-income households. Right now, support is designed and delivered differently across each area.

This means:
People can face different rules and levels of help depending on where they live
The system can be confusing and harder to navigate
Some people may be worse off if their earnings go up due to how support is reduced

While council tax support is a smaller benefit overall, it still plays a vital role – providing over £500 a year on average for the lowest-income households
The report suggests that bringing it into Universal Credit could:
✅ Simplify the system
✅ Make support clearer and more consistent
✅ Improve work incentives
✅ Reduce admin costs for councils

You can’t solve everything – and that’s okay.
When supporting people with money worries, it’s important to know your boundaries. Offering money guidance is incredibly valuable – but it’s not the same as providing regulated financial or debt advice.

Knowing the difference helps you:
✅ Give the right level of support
✅ Signpost people safely to expert help
✅ Protect your own wellbeing
Advice on financial products or debt solutions should always come from FCA-regulated professionals.

Supporting others starts with looking after yourself too.
