SCAMS ALERT!

There are a number of scams that have been targeting residents across County Durham in recent months including:

🔹QR code to pay for parking - QR codes have been left in council car parks or parking places as an option to pay for parking. Our car parks do not have any on or off street parking place that is payable by QR code.

🔹Battery operated card reader on parking machines - Small battery operated card readers are being attached to car park machines and tariff boards to encourage people to pay using this method. These are scam devices. Please do not pay using this option.

🔹Winter fuel payments - Residents are still receiving text messages from telephone numbers beginning with +485, with a fake link to a Government website

🔹Electoral register -We've been made aware that electors are falsely being asked for additional documents to process their electoral role application. The phishing emails are being sent from [email protected] or similar email addresses.

🚨Please be aware of a recent scam that currently appears to be rife in Bishop Auckland 🚨

Small battery operated card readers have been placed on machines and tariff boards.

The devices have all been removed, but there may be more circulating. The car parks affected - Castle Chare, Victoria Avenue and Kingsway car park.

Please be vigilant when paying for parking. Check machines for anything unusual or loose before inserting your card.
