🌟 Changes in Health Policy for Children with Diabetes in India.
Dr. Sujoy Ghosh, the winner of the 2025 Prize for Innovation, and his team have worked to shape India's new National Health Policy for Children with Diabetes, launched in April 30, 2026.
This groundbreaking policy represents a major commitment to improving access to high-quality diabetes care across the country. With federal funding, each of India's approximately 800 districts will establish a dedicated diabetes clinic staffed by a multidisciplinary team—including pediatricians, internists, nurses, nutritionists, counselors, data entry operators, and, where available, clinical psychologists with specialized diabetes training.
The initiative also includes:
💙 Community outreach to improve awareness and referrals
💙 Free access for people with to basal-bolus , syringes, , lancets, and 100 test strips each month
💙 No-cost testing and screening for diabetes-related complications and associated conditions
The national policy builds on the West Bengal Model for Type 1 Diabetes Care, developed, implemented, and rigorously evaluated by Dr. Ghosh and his colleagues over many years—demonstrating how locally developed, evidence-based models can successfully inform national policy.
