The story of a slightly mad idea that somehow became real
So⊠apparently it has been just over six months since we first opened the doors of Common Ground Cheltenham.
And before we show you the coffee, coworking, events, buns the size of your head (your words, not ours ) and people telling us, âIt feels like home hereâ⊠this is where we started.
We simply couldn't accept that a place at the heart of west Cheltenham since around 1947, full of history, memories and stories, should just end there.
So⊠we decided to write the next chapter.
Most sensible people would probably have walked in and said, âGood luck with that.â
We thought⊠âYes, but imagine the cafĂ© here.â
So we started. One room. One wall. One floor. One completely unexpected problem at a time.
It was definitely NOT just a quick paint job and a trip to IKEA.
More than 5,000 volunteer hours later, thanks to our small but mighty team, incredible community, partners, supporters and the slightly crazy people who believed us when we said, âTrust us, it will look amazingââŠ
Phase One is complete.
A huge thank you to Summerfield Trust, Gloucestershire County Council, Cheltenham Borough Council, Cotswold Bed Company, Gloucestershire College and every human being who helped us get here.
We still have a VERY long way to go. More rooms. More plans. More ideas. And probably more surprises hiding under a floor
But for today⊠swipe through.
This is where we started.
The âlook at us nowâ post is coming next.
P.S. Common Ground Cheltenham is run by Mission Inclusion CIC, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. Any profit goes straight back into our community, programmes and bringing the rest of this beautiful old building back to life.
People. Purpose. Planet. Accessibility. Not just words. At the heart of everything we do
