WellChild has welcomed the Government’s renewed focus on social care reform but is urging ministers to ensure children and young people with complex medical needs are not left out of the conversation. While much of the debate has focused on adult social care, WellChild warns that thousands of families face similar challenges, including delays to hospital discharge, shortages of skilled support and limited respite care, and is calling for dedicated reforms to help children with complex medical needs live safely and thrive at home. Our new WellChild Holiday Guide has been designed to help parent carers navigate the often overwhelming challenge of planning a holiday with a child who has complex medical needs.

We know that taking a break can feel incredibly difficult, sometimes even impossible. Yet holidays and days out can be so valuable, offering the chance to make memories, step away from daily routines, and enjoy time together.

Parents and carers with lived experience played an instrumental role in putting this guide together - their knowledge and skills are invaluable. We would also like to thank the additional contributors for their hard work; St. James's Place, Irwin Mitchell, Make-A-Wish UK & World Accessible Holidays. Last week, our Patron Prince Harry visited Birmingham Children's Hospital to meet families, WellChild Nurses and NHS colleagues who are helping children with complex medical needs receive the care they need at home.

From hearing families' experiences to seeing the WellChild Better at Home Suite in action, the visit highlighted the power of partnership in giving parents the confidence, skills and support they need beyond hospital.

Watch some of the highlights from a special day celebrating 20 years of the WellChild Nurse programme.

It was a pleasure to welcome WellChild Patron, Prince Harry, to Birmingham Children's Hospital today as he met families, WellChild Nurses and NHS colleagues who are transforming care for children with complex medical needs.

The visit celebrated 20 years of the WellChild Nurse programme and highlighted the incredible partnership helping families gain the confidence and skills to care for their children safely at home.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and continues to make this life-changing support possible.

This we take a look back at last years Parent/Carer WellChild award winner Mandy, and her story💜

Mandy is a devoted mum to four children, including Grace, who has cerebral palsy. Balancing her own family’s needs, Mandy has also raised funds for Grace’s life-changing surgery, co-founded a charity and continues to organise community activities. Known for her compassion and determination, she has made a lasting difference to countless families, always without seeking recognition.
