World Homeless Day was first held on 10 October, 2010.

It's a day when people across the world come together to respond to the issue of homelessness through action and discussion. While we are not a charity solely for those experiencing homelessness, the experience of homelessness drives our work with many guests. We advocate for those experiencing housing threat or loss and aim to encourage agencies to collaborate effectively to find suitable housing solutions for guests.

We were delighted to have the well-coiffed Arthur from Woods Barbers working at the Guest Hub recently.

Our guests not only appreciate Arthur's styling, they enjoy his friendly chat. Arthur told us he was inspired to offer his services after befriending one of our guests who later passed away. We all appreciate Arthur's kindness and his snip-tastic skills.

As we start to get organised for Christmas, we wanted to let everyone know that we won’t be recruiting Christmas volunteers this year. Many of our regular volunteers, who our guests know, are supporting us over Christmas. This means we do not have the capacity or the need to recruit additional Christmas volunteers.

We know that many people enjoy helping at the Guest Hub over the Christmas period. We appreciate that some people may be disappointed not to be able to volunteer this year.

We’re incredibly grateful for all the support and time that all our volunteers provide. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

There are lots of other ways to ensure people in our community feel cared for over Christmas. Donations of food or gifts are much appreciated by local charities and foodbanks who look out for people who are struggling over Christmas.

Our friends at Winchcombe Cycling Club and Cheltenham and County Cycling Club organised the recent Hell of the North Cotswolds cycling event, which took place on a sunny Sunday in September at Sudeley Castle.

They are strong supporters of the charity and invited us along (in a non-cycling capacity) to raise awareness about what we do. Giles (left) and Matthew (our Chair of Trustees) were on hand to answer questions and explain how people can help us. We had promises of donations sleeping bags which will be a great help to our guests as the weather cools. With riders following either a 50km or 100km route, our guys were very happy to be on the stand. Rumours that Matthew has committed to represent Open Door next year are as yet unconfirmed.

People experiencing homelessness and insecure accommodation are particularly vulnerable to falling victim to modern slavery – the exploitation of people through coercion, deception or force in order to provide labour, services, or criminality.

Those who manage to flee often find themselves homeless once again, and without a passport or ID. The mental and physical health impacts are significant.

It can be hard to know how to make an impact on this issue but you can help. Stay informed and aware, find out about the work of the charity Unseen & the Modern Slavery Helpline and report any concerns to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.

Access to nutritious, tasty food should not be a luxury.

We have a longstanding ethos of using fresh ingredients to create home-cooked meals that make people feel happy and cared for. We're also passionate about preventing food waste which often inspires our menus. Whether we're serving up shepherd's pie, a curry or a creamy pasta (chimichurri is a South American herby sauce, for the uninitiated), all our food is made with love. 😋

Not long until one of the most exciting – and loudest – fundraisers in our calendar – the Lansdown Block Party.

We're thrilled that has taken up the gauntlet yet again and is putting on an enviable line-up on 10 October. The action takes place at Deya Brewery, Ritual Roasters, Darcy W**e and The Steam and Whistle. There'll be DJ legends and local stars. Our friends at FareShare South West deliver great quality ingredients, which Chef Marc and his kitchen volunteers transform into tasty and nutritious meals.

Our relationship with FareShare South West is highlighted in their newly published Impact Report 2026, which covers all the areas of the southwest in which they work.
Across the region in just one year, FareShare has delivered organisations a whopping 1750 tonnes of good food that would otherwise have gone to waste. That’s the weight of 5,000 grand pianos! It’s 417 million meals worth of food with a retail value of £5.92 million.

Like ours, their organisation relies on volunteers. We’d like to thank everyone at FareShare who gives their time to fight food waste and food poverty.

100 cooked breakfasts served on a recent Sunday shift! 💯

Our brilliant Sunday volunteers Linda, Janet and Kizzy not only attended to the usual laundry, lockers, and wardrobe duties on a recent shift, they stepped into the kitchen to serve no less than 100 cooked breakfasts with a smile. Well done, ladies!
