It's Child Safety Week and today we're shining a light on road safety.

Younger children struggle to judge speed and distance, so modelling safe behaviour is key.

Road safety can be taught from a young age, here's some ways you can help them learn:

🤚Holding hands or using reins

🧠Talking about “stop, look, listen, think”

🏫Practising safe routes to school

🤳Encouraging them to put phones away when crossing roads

✨️Play is never just play!✨️

It’s children creating and maintaining patterns, building sensory awareness, learning to work as a team, solving problems, and making sense of the living world around them.

👉️ It’s discovering textures, smells, movement, and change.

👉️ It’s learning how to assess risks, make decisions, and grow confidence in their own abilities.

👉️ Through play, children are shaping who they are and how they understand their place in the world.

Next Thursday is International Day of Play!
A day that's recognised by the United Nations and aimed at ensuring every child has the right to play. Whether you are creating opportunities to play or allowing children to find their own rhythm of play, the benefits are unmatched.

Protect play. Protect children.

It's Child Safety Week and today we're shining a light on preventing falls as children grow.

As soon as babies can roll, wriggle or pull up, their risk of falling increases.

Here are some simple steps you can take :

👶Changing nappies on the floor

🚧Using safety gates on stairs

🪑Strapping children into highchairs

🪟Keeping furniture away from windows

👦Supervising trampoline use and avoiding mixed‑age bouncing

It's Child Safety Week and today we're shining a light on keeping sleep spaces safe.

Keeping a clear, simple sleep environment reduces the risk of suffocation and strangulation.

Ways you can keep your baby and young child's sleep space safe:

🛏️Keep cots free from pillows, bumpers and soft toys

💤 Avoid sleeping with your baby on a sofa

🧑‍🍼Use slings with care, your baby’s airway should always be visible and unobstructed

As well as keeping the direct sleep space free from hazards, it's also important to ensure the environment is safe too.

Blind cords can be dangerous in seconds, so make sure to:

1️⃣Fit cord cleats or tensioners

2️⃣Choose cord‑free blinds where you can

3️⃣Keep furniture away from windows to prevent climbing

It's Child Safety Week and today we're shining a light on the safe storage of cleaning products.

Brightly coloured laundry pods and cleaning sprays can be tempting to small children who are exploring their environment.

Here are a few simple habits make a big difference around your home:

⬆️Store products in a high or lockable cupboard

🫣Put them out of sight straight after use

🏷️Keep everything in its original container

👀Look out for products with Bitrex, a bittering agent that helps deter swallowing

It’s Child Safety Week, and over the next five days we’ll be sharing simple, everyday tips to help keep children safe.

Today we're looking at choking prevention. Choking is silent, but smart food prep can make a big difference.

🫐Cut round fruit like grapes, cherry tomatoes and blueberries lengthways in quarters

🧀Slice sausages, cheese, bread, and carrots into short, thin strips

🍿Avoid popcorn, marshmallows, hard boiled sweets, cubes of jelly and whole nuts for babies and young children

Always supervise and encourage sitting while eating.

For more information on smart food prep for babies and young children check out this guidance from the Child Accident Prevention Trust: https://capt.org.uk/choking-prevention/

We’re just three weeks away from the International Day of Play on the 11th of June, and this week we’re celebrating the simplicity of play.

Sometimes all it takes is a few bits and pieces from around the house to create something truly magical.

Today, we’re making moon sand; A soft, mouldable, wonderfully sensory dough that can be squeezed, crumbled, shaped, and explored in endless ways. And the best part is, you probably already have everything you need!

🌙 Moon Sand Recipe
This recipe makes enough for 1–2 children to enjoy.

You’ll need:
✨️ 1 cup of cornflour (or plain flour works too)

✨️ ¼ cup of vegetable oil (baby oil is a lovely alternative)

✨️ 1 teaspoon of peppermint essence (or any scent your little one loves)

✨️ A few drops of red food colouring (or try natural colours like beetroot water, turmeric, or crushed flower petals)

How to make it:
Pop everything into a bowl and mix with your hands, gently crumbling the mixture to help it bind. It will start to look like soft breadcrumbs, but when you squeeze a handful tightly, it will hold its shape.

Moon sand is such a simple, effective activity to enjoy at home. It supports fine motor skills, sensory exploration, early maths, language development, and so much more, all through play.

Give it a go this weekend and let us know what your little one creates.

Together we can protect play, protect childhood.

🌟International Day of Play is coming on the 11th of June!🌟

This global day, recognised by the United Nations, celebrates every child’s right to play, raising awareness of how vital play is for learning, wellbeing and healthy development.

In the lead‑up to 11 June, we’ll be sharing weekly posts all about the power of play including activity ideas from our Early Years Practitioners.

On the day itself, our centres and early years settings will be going BIG with extra play, joy and imagination.

Play belongs to everyone, so help us spread the word.
👉 Share this post with friends and family so more people know about International Day of Play.
👉 Tell us how you’ll be celebrating. Will it be at home, outdoors, or in your community.

Together lets protect play and protect childhood 🌈✨

Today we've launched a consultation on plans for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support for children and young people across the county and we want to hear your views 💬

The new SEND Sufficiency Strategy looks at how we can make sure there are enough SEND school places now and in the years ahead. Your views will help shape our plans and strengthen support for families and young people.

The consultation is open to everyone – and we especially want to hear from parents and carers, young people with SEND, and professionals working in education, health and care.
