Where can I get free business support in Hertfordshire?

If you’re planning to start or have just started your first business, you don’t have to figure everything out alone!

There are some great organisations that offer free support, including Hertfordshire Growth Hub, Wenta, Community Alliance Broxbourne and East Herts, Ambition Broxborne, Hertfordshire Opportunities Portal and us!

Better Business For All is also a national organisation that acts in various counties.

Think you only to register for Self Assessment when you earn £12,750?

Think again!

HMRC wants you to register as soon as you earn over £1,000 from self-employment, not the tax free allowance of £12,750.

That £1,000 is your trading allowance - earning more than that triggers your responsibility to register.

If you fail to register, you could incur late registration fees, miss deadlines and risk penalties.

The earlier you set up, the easier everything becomes.

How do I claim for petrol as a business owner?

You need to track your mileage in a simple log (i.e. Google Sheets or Excel).

Track the date, destination, and number of miles. The price per mile is now £0.55 for the first 10,000 miles (for car drivers). You can even claim £0.20 per mile for cycling!

Using a log can help you claim using HMRC’s approved rates, which cover fuel, wear and tear and running costs of your car.

Budgeting is a great way to build confidence in your finances.

If you’re not sure how to budget for your business, start here:

1. Understand your cash flow - what’s coming in and what’s going out?
2. Prioritise your spending - separate essential costs from ‘nice to haves’
3. Set a realistic plan - use historic numbers to fairly allocate spending on what worked, and cut back on what didn’t

What should an invoice include?

A good invoice should include:
✅ Your business name and contact details. This includes your registered office address, not just the trading one. If you’re VAT registered, include your VAT number
✅ The client’s name and details
✅ A unique invoice number
✅ The date (and payment due date)
✅ A clear description of what you’re charging for
✅ The total amount due. If you’re VAT registered, split the net, VAT and gross figures.

Stopping your business? Don't forget to tell HMRC.

If you're still registered for Self Assessment and don't submit a return because you've decided to stop your business, you can still get hit with late filing penalties - even if you haven't earned anything!

When you decide to stop trading, contact HMRC, let them know you're no longer trading and get taken off the Self Assessment register.

This 5-minute task (which can be done online) can save you from expensive penalties.

If you're not sure what your tax position is, send us a DM - it's better to ask early than assume.

Send this to someone who's recently stopped trading, so they don't get caught out.

How to stay on track in your first 500 days of business.

Keep it simple:
Stay on top of your numbers and record keeping.

Review your figures regularly.

Ask questions early and often.

Don’t focus on perfection, focus on what you’re learning.
