Why Toastmasters Speech Contests Matter

Since the early days of Toastmasters, speech contests have been an important part of the organisation's tradition.
“Whether a man wins or loses in the contest, he is a winner in what he has gained from making the effort.”
As cited by founder Dr Ralph C. Smedley, he believed that friendly competition encourages members to aim higher, develop their speaking abilities, and discover strengths they may not have realised they possessed.
Contests provide a unique opportunity to perform under pressure, receive recognition for hard work, learn from exceptional speakers, and build confidence that carries into both professional and personal life.

This spirit of growth was on full display this Saturday, 17th of October, at the Area Humorous Speech Contest, where John Cameron-McIntosh represented Chelmsford Speakers Club. Competing against a strong field of talented speakers, John delivered a fantastic performance to secure an impressive 2nd Place.

John's achievement is a reminder that success in Toastmasters is not just about the result, but about having the courage to step onto the contest stage and give your very best. We are incredibly proud of his accomplishment and grateful for the way he represented our club.

🎉 What a fantastic meeting at Chelmsford Speakers Club! 🎉

We celebrated a number of exciting firsts and achievements throughout the evening:

🎤 Scott - served as Toastmaster for the first time, guiding the meeting with amazing confidence and professionalism.

🌟 Jacqui - delivered a very confident first speech of Level 3 on the Persuasive Influence pathway.

👏 Khalid - took on the role of Evaluator for the first time and provided a very meaningful evaluation.

🏆 Maria - came to our meetings for the first time and also earned Best Table Topics Speaker.

Congratulations to all of you for stepping out of your comfort zones and making the meeting such a success. That's what Toastmasters is all about - learning, growing and supporting one another.

We're already looking forward to our next meeting and another evening of inspiring speeches, impromptu speaking and personal growth.
