We came across this grimy lot this morning when we happened to saunter past our local, friendly Howden Insurance branch. When asked what they were up to, a scrubber named Myrtle was ready to shoot her mouth off and speak to us. ‘ We earn every penny cleaning up after this lot. They’re sorting insurance out for that many dirty oil, gas and coal projects that we really have our work cut out trying to keep them looking squeaky clean. I do wish they didn’t advertise what they’re involved in insuring quite so obviously on their website though, it really does make our job so much harder’.

Our hearts break for those who’ve lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones in the path of this disaster. But make no mistake — this devastation is not “natural.” The is fuelling storms like Milton, making them more frequent, more violent, and more deadly.

How many lives will it take for world leaders to act?
How many forests, homes, and species must be destroyed before we change course?

The hurricane spent more than 12 hours crossing central Florida leaving more than 2.5million homes and businesses without power. The entire American home insurance industry is currently in freefall; insurers are cancelling existing policies and refusing to write ones, with others abandoning the state’s insurance market entirely.

Governor Ron DeSantis said the state has avoided the “worst case scenario” but, we are in a catastrophic reality we can no longer ignore.

It’s time to act like our survival depends on it - because it does.
