CHESS Homeless

CHESS Homeless CHESS works to ensure that people who find themselves homeless are supported in ways that enable them to move forward purposefully and in good health.

CHESS stands for "Churches Homeless Emergency Support Scheme" - which is a significant statement of who we are and what we are about. Individuals are referred onto our services providing accommodation, meals, laundry & hygiene facilities - so meeting their immediate needs. They are then assigned a Support Worker who will meet with them regularly and can help get them access to services from outsid

e agencies if required. Other services available to them through the CHESS programme of change are counselling services including mental health and substance abuse and various training courses to help with employment. Our aim is to help them get to a place where they can move on into their own accommodation and live independently again. We currently have space for 66 individuals in our 13 properties - 12 in Chelmsford and one in Epping. We also have an Outreach Team that works with rough sleepers in 8 districts: Chelmsford, Epping, Rochford, Braintree, Maldon, Uttlesford, Castle Point and Brentwood. Referrals come into us through www.streetlink.org.uk and we visit the individual to ascertain their immediate needs, providing emergency supplies like a sleeping bag, tent, snacks, warm clothes etc. If appropriate we can offer them an emergency room, access to a shower and food etc, but these services are limited at the moment.

This week’s tip 💡

Thinking about how you can help someone experiencing rough sleeping today?

Despite the rain last week, summer is on its way—so it’s a great time to think about small ways you can make a difference.

In winter, we often offer hot drinks like coffee. This summer, why not brighten someone’s day with a treat like an ice cream, or a practical essential like suncream?

Small gestures can go a long way ☀️

📖Myth Monday📖

This week, we want to highlight some important facts about payments.

We are aware of claims that CHESS charges a nightly bed fee of £10–£20 for rough sleepers. This is not true.

CHESS Homeless provides longer-term accommodation through a referral system.

Please stay vigilant and don’t be misled by this type of misinformation. If you’re ever unsure, feel free to contact us directly.

Stay informed. Stay safe.

A big thank you to the amazing volunteers from HSBC who came down to Turning Point 💚

They made a fantastic start clearing the weeds from our front lawn before the rain got the best of us ☔️🌱

Such a lovely group — we’d love to work with you again in the future! 🙌

🌿 Electric lawnmower needed🌿

As we head into the summer months, our attention is turning to the gardens — I’m sure we’re not the only ones!

We’re currently looking for an electric lawnmower to help keep our accommodation spaces tidy and welcoming. If anyone has one they’re no longer using, or would be willing to contribute towards purchasing one, it would be hugely appreciated.

Fingers crossed for some good weather so we can put it to good use! ☀️

Last week, we had a stall at Morrison’s in Newlands Spring collecting food donations for people sleeping rough in our community. We were joined by our amazing Outreach Team, who certainly caught everyone’s attention in their eye-catching costumes! 👏

A huge thank you to everyone who donated food, drinks, and snacks — your generosity will make a real difference and these items will go directly to people currently sleeping on the streets.

We’d also like to thank Morrison’s for continuing to support and work with us.
If you missed us this time, don’t worry — you can still help. We’ve put together a list of suggested donation items on our website:
