I was quite concerned yesterday when dining at Côte Brasserie to see a change in the way they label allergens in their menu.
So previously like the majority of good chain restaurants their online filters for allergens would include the addition of any meals using known ingredients that carried precautionary allergen warnings. ( may contain)
Now with this change their filters show you dishes that don’t have for example nut/peanut as an ingredient but you then have to click on the dish and then drop down to see in the ingredients description if it’s may contain product. Eg: see photos below. The dessert comes up as peanut and tree nut free by filter but the actual dish ingredients show it’s a may contain for multiple nuts!
I don’t understand why a company would take a step backwards when laws and guidelines for allergen labelling is moving forward and asking businesses to assist those with allergies to make clearly labelled choices.
Yes they can argue it’s still clear on their website which dishes have may contain warning ingredients but it’s the additional level of search that’s simply not needed plus it’s disappointing for the allergic customer to be given say 12 options after adding peanut free into the search and then find many of those are not suitable either due to the additional warnings then seen.
And what concerns me further was the comment from the Waitress saying “do you have to avoid dishes with known may contains too?! “ Seriously?
I have never heard that question being asked on dishes they know carry warnings. Quite the opposite, restaurants are normally quick to steer you away from anything that has a PAL warning!
Such a shame as it was one of our family go to restaurants with all our combined allergies so I’m now not convinced they are taking the allergic diners safety as seriously as they did previously.
Anyway it was just a heads up on the change and yep I’m quite sure my thoughts will be sent to their head office for what it’s worth.
