Luosko German Shepherd Dog Rescue We are a small independent charity set up to responsibly rescue, rehabilitate and rehome German Shepherds who find themselves in difficult situations.

Funded almost entirely by donations, we currently rehome around 100 dogs each year. Reg Charity 1188407 LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue was set up to assist other rescues to rehome and look after dogs in need a well as the dogs that we ourselves needed to rehome & look after on a day to day basis. The name LUOSKO is created from some of our dogs; LU - Lucca, OS - Oscar, KO - Riley AKA Solophina

asKO and we try to help dogs from the local area and Europe to find loving homes, whether permanent or foster homes. As of 2018 we switched our rescue efforts to a breed specific rescue, in order to help German Shepherds and Shepherd Mixes. We still continue to support other breeds, however we no longer take in other breeds at our centre. Our training, daycare & boarding services help to fund our rescue efforts . As with most rescues we also rely on the kindness of the general public and their donations, whether it be cash donations or items that can be used to help with the dogs : food, bedding, toys etc. If you would like to donate money, food, toys or bedding etc or even some time looking after and walking the dogs please get in touch on 08445881473 or message us on facebook

In early 2019 we officially teamed up with our spanish sister rescue Olivenza Perrera Dogs, however after the passing of its founder Amanda Frost in May 2019 we vowed to continue Amanda’s work by fully merging LUOSKO with Olivenza, thus creating LUOSKO-FROST Spanish Rescue Dogs as a seperate entity. In 2020 LUOSKO German Shepherd Dog Rescue transitioned to a registered charity set up to responsibly rescue, rehabilitate and rehome German Shepherds who find themselves in difficult situations. Funded almost entirely by donations, we rehome around 100 dogs each year. We generally have around 50 dogs in our care at any one time, in foster homes or in holding kennels awaiting suitable foster homes. We operate on a national basis so our dogs can be homed in most areas throughout the UK. 🌞🐾 Hot Weather = Cool Doggos at LUOSKO 🐾🌞

The weather was SO hot today that it was all about keeping our shepherds safe, comfortable and cool.

That meant:
🌳 Shady little walks along the driveway
🐕 Just 5 minutes in the field
💦 A little paddle for those who *wanted* to dip a toe
💤 Plenty of rest, shade and fresh water

Tomorrow is set to be even hotter ☀️ so it’ll be:
🥕 Frozen carrots
🧊 Frozen KONGs for treatos
💧 Constant access to water
🌳 Lots of shade and chill time for everyone

We never force dogs to cool down or go into water — choice matters. Some paddled happily today… others supervised from a safe distance like true German Shepherd health & safety officers 😂

It’s also important to remember that too much water can be dangerous. Water toxicity in dogs is very real, especially in hot weather when dogs are encouraged to over-drink or repeatedly chase water streams, balls or hoses. Cooling should always be calm, controlled and supervised.

Responsible rescues don’t march dogs around in dangerous heat just because “they need a walk”. Welfare comes first. Always.

☀️🐾 TODAY’S HOT WEATHER TOPIC: SUNBURN IN DOGS 🐾☀️

Yes — dogs CAN suffer from sunburn, and in some cases it can become extremely painful and serious.

Although breeds with thinner coats, pink skin or light pigmentation are often more susceptible, ANY dog can suffer from sun damage under the right conditions.

Even German Shepherds can be vulnerable in areas such as:
☀️ Nose
☀️ Ear tips
☀️ Belly/groin areas
☀️ Thinner coated patches
☀️ Areas clipped or shaved

This is one of the MANY reasons we strongly advise AGAINST shaving double-coated breeds unless medically necessary.

A German Shepherd’s coat is designed to help:
✔ Insulate from heat
✔ Protect skin from UV exposure
✔ Support temperature regulation
✔ Protect against environmental damage

Shaving often removes the very protection the dog naturally relies on.

✔ Provide shade
✔ Use cool resting areas
✔ Keep sessions outdoors short and controlled
✔ Avoid peak heat hours
✔ Allow calm rest and recovery

❌ Don’t assume thick-coated dogs are “too hot” and need shaving
❌ Don’t leave dogs exposed in direct sun for prolonged periods
❌ Don’t ignore redness, irritation or discomfort

Watch for:
⚠️ Red or pink skin
⚠️ Dry/cracked nose
⚠️ Flaking skin
⚠️ Pain when touched
⚠️ Excessive licking or scratching

At LUOSKO K9 Academy we believe prevention, structure and calm management create safer outcomes for dogs.

Calm, regulated dogs cope FAR better in hot weather than overstimulated dogs constantly pushed beyond their limits.

The goal is not chaos.

The goal is calm, safe, confident dogs.

☀️🐾 HOT WEATHER CAN TURN SERIOUS VERY QUICKLY 🐾☀️

Today we are focusing on:
💧 Water & hydration
🚗 Dogs in hot cars
🔥 Heatstroke & overheating
⚠️ Water toxicity

There is a LOT of misinformation online when it comes to dogs and hot weather — so here are some important things owners should understand:

✔ Always provide access to fresh cool water
✔ Encourage calm cooling and relaxation
✔ Use shade and short sessions outdoors
✔ Watch for early signs of overheating
✔ Keep enrichment calm and controlled
✔ Let dogs regulate naturally where possible

❌ Never leave a dog in a car
❌ Don’t force dogs to drink water
❌ Don’t overdo hosepipe or water games
❌ Avoid endless ball throwing in heat
❌ Don’t assume panting is “normal”
❌ Don’t cool dogs too aggressively with ice-cold water

Remember:
Dogs do NOT cool themselves like humans.

Overheated, overstimulated or frustrated dogs:
⚠️ Think less clearly
⚠️ Become stressed faster
⚠️ Lose impulse control
⚠️ Can become reactive or dangerous very quickly

Signs of heatstroke can include:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red gums
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness
• Wobbling
• Confusion
• Collapse

Water toxicity is also REAL and can happen during excessive water play or obsessive retrieve games in pools, lakes or hosepipes.

🐾 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – COMMUNITY OUTREACH 🐾

Here at LUOSKO, community outreach is something we are incredibly passionate about ❤️

We have recently been invited to attend several care homes with our dogs, giving residents the opportunity to spend time with them, have a cuddle, a chat, and enjoy the comfort and companionship dogs can bring 🐶

Unfortunately, due to other commitments, many of our current volunteers are unavailable — so we are now looking for kind, friendly volunteers who may be able to help us continue this amazing work.

📍 Trentham House Care Home, Trentham (ST4 8HN)
📅 First Friday of every month
🕝 2:30pm – 4:00pm

We would especially love to hear from people who:
✅ Can drive - BUT NOT ESSENTIAL
✅ Are comfortable using our sign-written LUOSKO vehicle
✅ Enjoy chatting with residents
✅ Would be happy taking one of our dogs around for residents to meet, stroke and fuss over

This role is incredibly rewarding and makes a genuine difference to people who may not regularly get the chance to interact with animals ❤️ you will not be alone you will start by shaddowing one of or regular helpers!

☀️🐾 HOT WEATHER IS COMING… PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS SAFE 🐾☀️

Normally, educational sheets like these are shared exclusively inside the LUOSKO K9 Academy private member group as part of our ongoing owner education and support programme.

However, with the hotter weather arriving, we genuinely feel the information we are about to share over the coming days is IMPORTANT for every dog owner — regardless of training background, breed, age or experience.

There is a huge amount of misinformation surrounding dogs and hot weather online, and unfortunately poor advice can sometimes lead to very serious consequences.

So over the next few days we will be sharing a full series of simple, evidence-based educational graphics covering:
🔥 Heatstroke
🔥 Burnt paws
🔥 Dogs in cars
🔥 Artificial grass
🔥 Water safety & toxicity
🔥 Sunburn
🔥 Overstimulation in heat

At LUOSKO K9 Academy we want owners to enjoy summer SAFELY — without panic, myths or misinformation.

✔ Short shaded walks
✔ Calm enrichment sessions
✔ Fresh water always available
✔ Paddling pools used correctly
✔ Frozen KONGs and calm licking activities
✔ Rest, recovery and relaxation
✔ Teach your dog to settle and switch off

❌ Endless ball throwing in heat
❌ Over-exercising
❌ Hot pavements/artificial grass
❌ Leaving dogs in cars
❌ Frantic hosepipe games
❌ Forcing dogs to drink water
❌ Assuming “they’ll be fine”

Remember:
Dogs do NOT regulate heat like humans.

Calm, well-rounded, well-mannered dogs that understand how to “do nothing” cope FAR better in extreme heat than constantly overstimulated dogs.

The pinnacle of pet dog training is not tricks…

It is the ability to peacefully exist in the human world.

⚠️ Watch for:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red gums
• Vomiting
• Weakness
• Wobbling
• Refusing to move
• Frantic behaviour
• Burnt paws
• Confusion or collapse
