"When you first arrive at Amber it may feel like a step back, but it’s a step back to move 10 steps forward."
Josh recently moved on from Amber to Emmaus, another charitable organisation that provides a home, support, work and training to people with a history of homelessness. 🫶
Before arriving at Amber Josh became homeless after a family dispute
“It was a really difficult time for me. I had lived with my grandmother for almost 2 years, but our relationship broke down and I found myself homeless. I stayed in a Travel Lodge for a few nights, but I couldn’t stay there for very long. Fortunately, my housing officer made a referral to Amber, and I moved in a few days later.
I was unsure of how I would get on at first and I didn’t know what to expect. I had never lived communally before so I was a bit nervous.”
Once Josh had settled into a routine, he started to engage with the workshops, he particularly focused on employability and tenancy skills.
“I was pretty good at looking after myself, I could already cook and clean, but where Amber really helped me was on employment readiness and how to understand the rental system.”
Whilst at Amber, Josh secured part-time employment at a national retailer where he gained valuable experience in customer service.
“It was great working at Dunelm, the staff there were so supportive and I really felt part of a team. Working there has given me the confidence I needed, I’m really excited to be moving forward and working in Emmaus’ social enterprise.
The entire team at Amber have really helped me and I feel ready for the next chapter of my life. ”
