Ronnie Jones Trio with special guest Simon Spillett –

Simon Spillett - saxophone
William Butterworth - piano
Marcus Vergette - bass
Ronnie Jones - drums

Top-class tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett takes to the Lerryn Memorial Hall stage on Saturday 30th May - supported by drummer Ronnie Jones’s Trio. Simon is back playing for the first time in Cornwall in 14 years !

Rightly regarded as one of the finest sax players in the country, Simon Spillett is in the South West to mark the 30th anniversary of his professional debut; bursting on to the jazz scene as an effervescent - and fully-formed - talent in his early 20s.

Simon has gone on to forge a white hot, stellar career, with numerous sold out headline shows at the UK’s premier jazz clubs: Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express (Soho); plus appearances at major UK jazz festivals - including the ESG London jazz festival - not to mention winning a.handful of top jazz industry awards along the way.

Simon is also a highly-regarded band leader, whose all-star Tubby Hayes Big Band released a critically-acclaimed album, and recently recorded a second, at world-famous Abbey Road studios.

The tenor virtuoso is supported by three exceptional Devon-based musicians - William Butterworth (piano); Marcus Vergette (bass); and Ronnie Jones (drums) - all firm Restormel Arts jazz fraternity favourites.

Ronnie and Marcus joined us for a wonderful performance in February last year, in Ronnie's quartet. They’re joined this time by the exceptional talent which is pianist Will Butterworth.

Join us for an evening of outstanding jazz from one of the country’s top saxophonists; supported by jazz musicians, who we know and love. Simon is the real deal. A genuine bebop colossus; he is rightly regarded as one of the top alto sax players in the country.

Simon is also a very highly-regarded band leader whose Tubby Hayes Big Band has sold out the top jazz clubs in the country; released a critically-acclaimed album, and recently recorded a second album at world-famous Abbey Road studios.

This dynamic trio will bring the drive, momentum and shared insight into Monk’s distinctive musical voice, offering both longtime listeners and newcomers a chance to experience his remarkable music performed live.

Simon Latarche – piano / Roberto Manzin – saxophone / Sam Norman - double bass / Keith Marshall - drums

Roberto, from Rome, is regarded as one of the UK’s finest and most versatile saxophonists. Time Out call him ‘scorching’, Jazzwise say ‘he has to be heard to be believed’ and that he is ‘easily a match for Brecker or Bergonzi’…

An exciting concert brought to you by our friends at Metronome -

Naissance – Oh Come Emmanuel!
Presented by Jon Lloyd and John Law Date: Friday 12 December 2025 | 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM Location: St Just in Roseland Church, TR2 5JD

“” is the new project from the duo of Britain’ leading jazz/classical musicians Jon Lloyd (saxophone) and John Law (piano). The music spans classical, jazz, ambient and subtle textural samples and will engage audiences from all tastes. Both are musicians and composers with more that 50 recordings to their names and performance credits demonstrating long associations with many of the leading players in the British contemporary music and jazz firmament– Tim Garland, Jason Rebello, Evan Parker, Barry Guy and the London Sinfonietta
Their most recent project which was performed live in Cornwall was the ambient work “” – an improvised work using looping derived from sacred vocal texts with live visuals designed by Patrick Dunn (of Tangerine Dream fame) and which was performed in Truro Cathedral in 2023. This new project “” will also use the warm and vibrant ambience of visually stunning and reverberant church spaces but on a much more intimate level. This performance takes place in the tranquil, waterside Norman church of St Just in Roseland which is set in what was described by Sir John Betjeman as “ to many people the most beautiful churchyard on earth”
This performance of Naissance takes place appropriately just before Christmas – it will feature a new composition based on the wonderful ancient Advent Hymn “ veni Emmanuel” (Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel) and audiences of all ages and are invited to come and immerse themselves in music that is both contemplative and inspiring.

Naissance:
“Music of contemplation and renewal.” London Jazz News
“Thank you for creating this utterly moving coming together of beauty!” Audience member

Jon Lloyd:
“A saxophone delivery as persuasive as a speaking voice.” Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD
“…creating music of often startling beauty.” Jazzwise Magazine
“The only music you want to hear.” London Jazz News

John Law:
“Combining the vocabularies of classical and jazz in a singular and seamless way, coalescing improvisational surprise and a deep elegiac musicality.” All About Jazz
“As well as being a formidable thematic improviser, whose phrasing constantly opens up new twists, Law writes beautiful romantic ballads" The Guardian
“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists.”
International Piano Magazine.

It’s a "Room Five" debut for Ronnie’s Trio; but the drummer is no stranger on the Cornish jazz circuit.
Restormel Arts regulars will remember Ronnie’s Quartet performance at Lerryn Memorial Hall earlier this year; and his quartet’s previous performances at Duchy Nursery for 'Lostwithiel Jazz Cafe'.

Jazz fans elsewhere in Cornwall may recall Ronnie’s appearance earlier this summer with Ralph Freeman's Quartet at St Ives Jazz Club; featuring trumpeter Steve Waterman. Ronnie also appeared at St Ives with pianist John Horler’s ‘Celebrating Bill Evans’ Trio in recent years. That band (with Alec Dankworth on bass) went on to play two (sold out) shows at Ronnie Scott’s; plus a live appearance on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune - not to mention an upcoming show at Ronnie’s next month.

Ronnie is joined by long-time musical collaborators: Marcus Vergette on bass; and Joss Kidd on guitar.
