A highlight for everyone who visits Magdalen Farm is the interaction with our chickens and collecting their eggs! 🥚

We have two different breeds here at the farm, the Leghorn and the Speckledy, who are both great large egg layers. This is perfect for the number of breakfasts our kitchen team cater for each week! 🐔

Back in April our education ranger Izzie found some Orange Tip Butterfly eggs laid upon a cuckoo flower. Fast forward a few months and the eggs have hatched!

Using a hand lens Izzie managed to capture some up close images of caterpillars at different stages of their life. Each time a caterpillar sheds it's skin, it is known as an instar.

Upon cleaning out the beehives, we discovered an empty mason bee nest!

Unlike some other bees, mason bees live independently. Having mated, the female will find somewhere to nest, normally a small cavity somewhere. Within the holes she will build capsules for the larvae and partition them with mud.

Building bug hotels is a fantastic way to create spaces for mason bees to nest, particularly using bamboo canes and bricks with holes in! 🐝

Harvesting mangetout straight from the plant is a highlight for many of our visiting groups!

We often talk about a 'pay it forward' scheme here at the farm, where the groups that visit us at the beginning of Spring plant the mangetout seeds, with others planting them into the beds, and other groups later on in the year can enjoy harvesting the peas!

In particular we love seeing slow worms and grass snakes around our vegetable garden, as they act as pest control by eating the slugs and snails!

Being a part of the The Ernest Cook Trust Outdoor Week of Learning (OWLs) programme, is a highlight for us here at the farm. During the week schools take part in a variety of activities encompassing teamwork, orienteering, farming, and engaging with nature. 💚

One of our activities involves 'Nature Connection Stops'. Whilst out and about across the farm groups are given tasks as a way to connect them with their surroundings. One of the tasks is to write a poem reflecting on the landscape. This beautiful poem was written by two pupils from Beechwood Primary. 💙
