The area around Hocombe Mead was once an extensive heathland.

By 2010 there were only about half a dozen heather plants remaining. Seed was collected from these and new plants were grown by John Caplan, a Friends of Hocombe Mead volunteer.

These plants became the heather patch which now exists, and which has started spreading naturally. The original plants have now matured, so, in December and January, we've been cutting some of them back to encourage regeneration and new growth. The site will be cut back in phases over several years, so there will be a range from new plants to mature woody ones.
