At our WI meeting on Wednesday, our guest speaker was unfortunately unable to attend at the very last moment so Sylvia Beardshaw gallantly stepped in and gave a virtual walking tour of the houses, domestic and public, in Chaddesley Corbett.

Setting the scene, Sylvia referred to Chaddesley’s first mention in a Saxon charter in 816. In the Doomsday Book in 1086 as Cedeslai, the settlement was large and prosperous featuring a Saxon noblewoman as landowner; one of the very few large estates in England to remain in the hands of a native Anglo-Saxon noblewoman after the Norman Conquest. And who knew that Ealdgyth (Eddied) the manor owner was Lady Godiva’s granddaughter!

Everyone was enthralled by Sylvia’s talk. The photo shows Christine, our President thanking Sylvia on behalf of us all.

After a brief explanation and demonstration of encaustic art by Jane this evening, CCWI Craft Club were let loose with travel irons and blocks of wax. And how creative the group were!

We welcomed three visitors - Emma, Kate and Zhara - who joined in enthusiastically and very artistically. At the end of the evening, everyone admired the variety of styles, textures and colours of their paintings - evident in the photos.
