🦜❤️ WHY DO WE ASK FOR A DONATION WHEN FOSTERING A PARROT?

We are often asked why we request a donation when a bird may have only needed a routine vet check.

The simple answer is that donations don’t just support the bird you are fostering. They help us care for all the parrots in our rescue, including those requiring expensive ongoing veterinary treatment and medication.

Donations also help cover essential costs such as cages, food, toys and fuel for transporting birds.

❤️By fostering one parrot, you are helping us care for many others.

Every donation goes towards giving the birds in our care the best possible life. 🦜

I have attached a copy of our vet bill for the year to date, since this date we’ve had another £425 added on for Bella and Bertie who were at the vets yesterday. So we are currently sitting at around 6k to date.

❤️🦜 TWO MORE BIRDS WHO NEED OUR HELP 🦜❤️

We currently have two more parrots receiving ongoing veterinary care. When we were asked to take Bella and Bertie into the charity, we knew they would need veterinary treatment, but we didn’t turn them away. ❤️

🐦 Firstly, we have Bella.

Bella arrived with a lump above her eye. Our vet drained it, but sadly, just a couple of weeks later, it returned. Bella was back at the vets, where she was anaesthetised so the eye could be drained again, her nares flushed and blood samples taken for testing.

Our vet is concerned because Bella isn’t eating very well and has lost weight. She’s currently on antibiotics while we anxiously await her blood test results. 🤞❤️

🦜 Secondly, we have Bertie.

Bertie has been pulling out all his tail feathers and biting at the skin where his feathers should be, causing it to become very sore and scabby. This self-mutilating behaviour had been happening for some time before he came into our care.

Thankfully, there is no infection present at the moment. Our vet has prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, and Bertie will need regular veterinary visits so his progress can be monitored.

We’re particularly worried that Bertie could become another Alfie situation. Once a parrot starts self-mutilating, it can be incredibly difficult to stop, as the behaviour can become a habit.

❤️ We knew both birds needed help, and we couldn’t turn our backs on them.

💚 HARRY’S STORY UPDATED… HOPE, HEARTBREAK, HOPE AND A FIGHT FOR LIFE ❤️🦜

As many of you know, Harry arrived at Parrots In Need Rescue in February 2026. Not long after arriving, we knew something wasn’t right. Harry began suffering from falls, some of them quite severe, and heartbreakingly, he suffered a heart attack. Harry is only 9 years old 😔

Following blood tests, an X-ray and an ultrasound, Harry was diagnosed with liver disease, atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in the blood vessels around his heart), high cholesterol, kidney dysfunction and anaemia.

We knew we had a long road ahead of us.

We changed Harry’s diet, converting him onto pellets and encouraging him to eat a good selection of vegetables. On our vet’s advice, we also introduced milk thistle and omega-3 supplements to support his health.

Then Harry developed weakness in his left leg and completely lost his grip. Our vet suspected his enlarged liver was pressing on his sciatic nerve, so Harry was prescribed daily pain relief.

Slowly, we began to see improvements. ❤️

We went five weeks without a fall and three weeks without needing his pain medication. Harry grew lots of beautiful new feathers and, most importantly, we started seeing his little personality shine through again. His vet was pleased with the progress he was making, and we finally felt we were moving in the right direction.

But sadly, Harry’s journey hasn’t been straightforward.

Around two weeks ago, Harry took another worrying turn. He began experiencing severe spasms in both feet, resulting in multiple falls once again. He was extremely agitated, his wings and head were constantly twitching, he was scratching himself relentlessly and he destroyed most of his beautiful new feathers.

Even at night, Harry struggled to settle.

Many nights, I stayed awake with him, desperately trying to help him feel comfortable. The only way he would settle was to come and sleep on me on the sofa, and even then, we would only get a couple of hours.

We restarted his pain relief on the vet’s advice, but sadly, it made no difference.

We took Harry back to the vets for further blood tests. His vet was concerned that his liver disease might have progressed and warned us that the results could be difficult to hear. Alongside this, Harry was prescribed Gabapentin to help manage his nerve pain.

After several anxious days and bucketloads of tears, his results finally came back. We were all in for a shock, including his vet!

Despite Harry’s recent deterioration, most of the blood markers tested had actually improved. His liver markers had improved, although his liver still isn’t functioning as it should. His kidney function had returned to normal, and he was no longer anaemic.

However, there was another concern. Despite all our efforts with Harry’s low-fat diet, his cholesterol levels had increased.

Because of this, Harry needed two additional medications: one to help manage his cholesterol and another to relax the blood vessels around his heart, helping to reduce the strain on it.

Harry will also need blood tests every three months, costing £250 each time, so his vet can monitor his liver function, cholesterol and overall health and make any necessary adjustments to his treatment.

And now for the news we have all been desperately hoping for… 💚

Since introducing Harry’s new medications, we have seen a wonderful improvement. His feet have stopped spasming, his grip has improved considerably, and the twitching in his wings has reduced massively.

And that beautiful little personality we thought we were losing is shining through once more. 🥹❤️

We know Harry still has a long road ahead. His liver disease and atherosclerosis are serious conditions, and he needs ongoing medication, regular blood tests and specialist veterinary care. We cannot promise what the future holds, but we can promise that we will continue to do everything we can to give him the best quality of life possible.

🐦 THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP. 💚

As a charity, we rely on the kindness and generosity of our supporters to help us care for birds like Harry. His ongoing treatment, medication and regular veterinary monitoring are essential, and the costs quickly add up.

His blood tests alone cost £250 every three months, and these are vital to help our vet monitor his condition and guide his ongoing treatment.

We have included a separate poster alongside Harry’s story detailing the medication and supplement costs involved in his care, so you can see just how much support he needs.

❤️ Please consider donating towards Harry’s ongoing care. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us provide the treatment and support he needs.

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing Harry’s story. You never know who might see it and be able to help.

Harry is so much more than his diagnoses. He is a little character who has fought so hard, and seeing him settled, comfortable and showing us his cheeky personality again means the world to us.

We want to give Harry every chance to enjoy the happy, comfortable life he deserves.

💚 Please help us continue Harry’s journey. Every donation, every share and every bit of support means the world to us and to Harry.

Thank you for supporting Harry and Parrots In Need Rescue. Together, we can make a difference. ❤️🦜

💔🦜 WHY YOUR DONATIONS MATTER — ALFIE’S STORY

Sometimes, we wish we could save every bird who comes through our doors. We wish we could take away their pain, undo the neglect they have suffered and give every single one the happy ending they deserve.

Sadly, the reality is that rescuing parrots takes more than love alone. It takes veterinary care, medication, investigations, operations and ongoing support. This is why donations to Parrots In Need Rescue are so incredibly important. ❤️

Today, we want to share Alfie’s story to help you understand exactly what your donations can mean to a little life in desperate need.

Alfie the African Grey — A Story of Love, Courage and a Little Soul Who Touched Our Hearts

On 17th January 2026, a little African Grey named Alfie arrived at his safehouse.

Alfie had not had the life he deserved. He had been neglected by his previous owner, and when he arrived, it was clear that he was desperately unwell and in terrible pain. Nobody had taken him to the vets. Nobody had helped him.

Alfie had been left to suffer.

The pain became so unbearable that Alfie began pulling out his own feathers and attacking his poorly wing, desperately trying to find some way to ease the agony he was feeling.

As soon as he arrived at his safehouse, Alfie was taken straight to the vets. He needed X-rays, treatment and medication for his injuries. It was the beginning of a long and difficult journey — but it was also the beginning of a new life.

A life where Alfie would finally know what love felt like.

At his safehouse, Sophie and Frazer took Alfie under their wings. They gave him the care, patience and kindness that he had been missing for so long. They made sure he received his medication, comforted him when he was frightened and, most importantly, showed him that he was safe.

And Alfie knew.

He knew that Sophie loved him.

Alfie became incredibly attached to Sophie. The bond they shared was something truly special. They would cuddle together, and Alfie simply didn't want to leave her side. Sophie became his safe place, and Alfie became a little piece of her heart.

Slowly, ever so slowly, Alfie began to improve.

His feathers started to grow back. His beautiful little body began to heal, and his wing appeared to be getting better. After everything he had been through, there was finally hope that Alfie might have a happy future.

But sadly, Alfie's journey was not going to be an easy one.

He developed an infection in his poorly wing and had to return to the vets. More medication followed, and Sophie and Frazer continued to do everything they could to help him.

For three weeks, they waited and hoped.

But Alfie's wing was not getting better.

Eventually, the heartbreaking decision was made that there was only one thing left that could be done to stop his suffering.

His wing would have to be removed.

On 19th August 2026, Alfie went into surgery.

It was a frightening time for everyone who loved him. But Alfie was a fighter. He had already survived so much. He had endured pain, neglect and illness, and yet he still had so much love to give.

After his operation, Alfie returned to his safehouse.

Sophie and Frazer were there waiting for him.

Once again, they surrounded him with love and care. They stayed beside him, making sure he was comfortable and safe. That night, Sophie and Frazer sat up with Alfie, refusing to leave him alone. They watched over him throughout the night, hoping and praying that their little boy would make it through.

They wanted Alfie to know that he was loved.

That he wasn't alone.

That someone was finally there for him.

Sadly, on 21st August 2026, just two days after his operation, Alfie passed away.

His little body had simply been through too much.

Alfie may have only been in Sophie and Frazer's lives for a short time, but the impact he made will last forever.

He came to them broken, frightened and in pain.

But he left this world knowing what love was.

He knew the warmth of a cuddle with Sophie. He knew the gentle care of Frazer. He knew what it felt like to have someone fight for him, comfort him and stay beside him when he needed them most.

Alfie's story is heartbreaking, but it is also a story of love.

Because although his previous life had been filled with neglect and suffering, his final chapter was filled with kindness.

Sophie and Frazer couldn't change what had happened to Alfie before he came to them. They couldn't take away the pain he had already endured.

But they changed the ending.

They gave him a safehouse.

They gave him medicine.

They gave him cuddles.

They gave him their time.

They gave him their love.

And when Alfie needed them most, they stayed by his side.

Fly high, beautiful Alfie.

You deserved a lifetime of love, but even in your short time here, you touched hearts in a way that will never be forgotten.

You were loved.

You were cared for.

You were never alone.

And you always will be remembered.

Rest peacefully, little Alfie. 🦜💔

And this is why your donations matter.

❤️ Your donations help us get birds to the vets when they desperately need help.

❤️ Your donations help pay for X-rays, investigations, medication, treatment and life-saving or pain-relieving surgery.

❤️ Your donations help us care for birds who arrive frightened, neglected, injured or seriously unwell.

❤️ Your donations help us give vulnerable parrots a chance they might otherwise never have had.

Not every story has the happy ending we desperately hope for. Sometimes, despite everything the vets, carers and rescue can do, a little life has simply endured too much. But every bird deserves the chance to receive treatment, to be comfortable and to know love, whatever the outcome.

Alfie’s story reminds us that rescue isn’t always about saving a life. Sometimes, it is about ending suffering, providing comfort and making sure a bird knows it matters.

We are a charity, and we rely on the kindness and generosity of people who care about parrots. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us continue our work and be there for the next bird who needs us.

You may never meet the parrot your donation helps. You may never see the difference it makes. But behind every veterinary bill, every bottle of medication and every journey to the vets is a little life that needs someone to care.

Please, if you can, consider making a donation to Parrots In Need Rescue. You could help us be there for another bird like Alfie, giving them the care, dignity and love they deserve.

If you cannot donate, sharing this post can help us reach someone who can. Every share matters, and every act of kindness helps us continue.

Fly high, beautiful Alfie. 🦜🌈

You deserved so much more time, but you will never be forgotten. Thank you, Sophie and Frazer, for loving him so completely and for showing him that he was never alone.

Because every parrot matters. Every life matters. And every little soul deserves to know love. ❤️💔
