Stays break! They are designed to do so to prevent more serious damage to the bell.

When they do (say on the number 6 bell), the old cracked stay has to be removed, and the new stay (with holes positioned correctly) has to be inserted.

It turned out to be a multi-visit task to complete the substitution. Delicate fitting (with a hammer) revealed that a little more work was needed on the drilled holes positioning.

Attention then switched to re-hanging the service bell rope which had been spliced to replace a temporary repair. It had to be let down from the bell chamber to the choir vestry and up past the bells to the service bell frame at the louvre level of the tower. There it was passed round the bell wheel and secured to the centre.

A later visit on Saturday saw the re-engineered stay fit nicely onto the bell, and once more all available bells were safe and ready to ring.
