SVP Caterham

SVP Caterham We are here for support and in us you will always find a friend. In Caterham, the Conference was refounded in 2015 and we currently have a dozen members.

SVP Caterham is a local SVP group, part of the St Vincent de Paul Society (England and Wales). We provide practical assistance to the local community and befriend/ visit people in need. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul - SVP- was founded by Blessed Frederic Ozanam in 1833 for the purpose of providing relief for those in need in the local area under the patronage and inspiration of St Vincent de

Paul. Eleven years later the first English Conference was formed, and the SVP has continued to do great work ever since. We support people in need in a variety of ways; visiting the elderly and lonely; organising shopping; providing lifts to medical appointments or church for those unable otherwise to get out. We are sometimes provide small grants to tide people over times of difficulty. Recently we have provided tablet computers for the housebound, which has unabled them to follow the church services online. We also organise an annual subsidised day trip. We support various organisations such as the Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group, and two SVP Conferences in India. We also contribute to the national SVP campaigns. When no lockdown restrictions allow, we run a monthly film club, a knitting club and an IT support club. We regularly organise fundraising activities, such as cake sales, quizzes and Christmas fairs. New ideas for events are keenly received! We are always glad to welcome new members. You are bound to find an activity to use your interests and talents to the benefit of our community. Please contact Biddy Lovat, our Conference President on 07599890043 or email us at [email protected].

The SVP Knitting Club
We are delighted that once again we can have our monthly meetings, after the restrictions imposed by Covid. At present we do so in St Thomas’s Parish Hall on the third Monday of the month from 2pm to 4pm. The group consists of skilled knitters to learners, but everyone has something to offer. It is a very relaxed atmosphere, with lively chat as well as a great deal of knitting for charity and of course, tea and homemade cakes. Knitters of all levels are welcome.
We have contacts with the Sisters of Charity in London and have provided a variety of knitted items for the mothers and children that they support.
Some weeks ago, we contributed knitted items for babies and toddlers for a Ukraine Appeal organised by a group in Purley.
Last week we had a successful Parish Sale of soft toys, beautiful bags, scarves and other knitwear, with proceeds going to the purchase of wool as required and the work of the SVP Caterham Conference.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE SVP
Following your generosity over the Christmas Season, we would like to express our thanks to parishioners for all your donations, both in money and goods. These are all greatly appreciated and put to good use.
For members of the SVP, it has been a humbling reminder that we can do so little without your support. As we all know, times are hard for many at the moment with little hope of things improving in the near future, and it is so important that we put our faith into action in our local community by offering support where it is needed. With you help, we have been able to offer fresh food to many who use the foodbank for dried goods. In some cases we have given both food support and clothing to families in the Caterham area who are in need of it, as well as some Christmas gifts. You will be pleased to know that we are able to respond when occasional help is needed with a fuel bill, school shoes, a new warm coat, toiletries or a thermometer for a new mum. Donations of wool for our knitting club have also been gratefully received. Our support for the Gatwick detainees and locally placed refugees continues.
The SVP has a local charity shop in Crawley and we have been able to support it by delivering a great selection of donated toys just before Christmas.
We are so grateful to be part of a parish which offers such a generous support for the work of the SVP! We are delighted to have welcomed more members in recent months. This allows us to keep building on our existing work. There are two ways of joining the SVP; as a full member who would like to visit (DBS needed), or as auxiliary member, who can offer occasional support for our activities. All members are welcome to attend our fortnightly meetings, which keep us united in prayer and action.
