Statement from East Belfast Community

The members of the Inner East Forum, the Short Strand Community Forum and the East Belfast Tension Monitoring Group wish to extend our collective solidarity with the victim of last Mondays horrific attack. Our thoughts are with him and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery.

As important as our condemnation of this despicable attack is, the need for us to condemn the widescale violence and hatred aimed at ethnic minority families across the city has overshadowed the seriousness of the incident in Kinnaird Way. The sight of terrified families fleeing their homes because of their ethnicity and racial background is totally unacceptable in 2026 and can have no place in our society and should not be mistaken for protest.

The destruction of public services, the widescale vandalism and the general fear and disruption forced upon communities across the city is also unforgiveable and should also not be mistaken for protest. This episode should bring shame on those in our communities who seek to sow fear and division amongst us and our young people. There can never be an excuse for racism and violence.

People from our migrant communities play an essential part in keeping our city running, playing vital roles in sustaining our healthcare and public services and it is clear that without them, our city would be much poorer and less colourful. We wish to extend our solidarity with our neighbours, to let them know that we appreciate their contributions to our city and that we will continue to support their welcome inclusion in our communities.

Statement ends.

A message to our youth workers, young people and families, from our Chief Executive Officer.

To all youth workers, staff, volunteers, and management committees across the region: I want to take a moment to address you directly during what is an incredibly tense and challenging time for our communities.

First and foremost, thank you.

Your unwavering dedication to our children, young people and communities is nothing short of remarkable. Every single day, you are on the front line, providing safe, welcoming sanctuaries where young people feel valued, heard and supported. Whether you are delivering critical programmes on the ground, generously volunteering your time, or providing vital leadership on a management committee, your contribution is the absolute bedrock of our sector.

However, we cannot ignore the deeply troubling climate unfolding around us. We must be absolute and uncompromising in our stance: We categorically condemn the racism, hatred and violence currently threatening our young people, families and communities right across society.

The prejudice, dangerous misinformation and hostility we are witnessing stand in direct opposition to everything youth work represents. Our young people are watching, and many are being directly exposed to this violence and division. Now, more than ever, they need the critical, reflective dialogue and the safe, positive alternatives that only you can provide. By keeping your doors open, facilitating difficult conversations and challenging these destructive, racist narratives, you are actively dismantling division and offering genuine hope.

Please know that your work is seen, valued, and fiercely protected. The Youth Work Alliance team and I stand completely in solidarity with you.

To the families across our communities who are feeling targeted, anxious, or frightened by the recent surge in racism, hatred and violence: we stand with you.

Youth Work Alliance and all of our member organisations want to make one thing absolutely clear: our services are, and always will be, a completely safe place for your children. We believe in equality for all, and our core message remains that absolutely everyone is welcome here.

We know this is a frightening time, and we do not want any family to feel isolated. We strongly encourage you to:
Reach out to your local youth club: Their doors are open. The youth workers are here to support your young people, offering them a secure, supervised environment to process what is happening, shielded from violence and misinformation.

Contact your local representatives: Make your voices heard. Reach out to your local political representatives to demand that they stand up for inclusive communities, condemn this hatred, and protect the vital community services that keep our young people safe.

We are fully committed to a shared future built on respect and understanding. We are undeniably stronger together, and the youth sector will continue to fight for a safe, inclusive society for every single family.

Our message is clear:
🌍 Inclusive Youth Services: Everyone is welcome here.

🤝 Equality for All: We are committed to ensuring young people can be themselves and build positive relationships.

🛑 Stand Against Racism: We reject hatred, violence, and misinformation in all its forms.

🌈 Different Backgrounds, Shared Future: We are undeniably stronger together.

100%!

Youth Work Alliance is appalled by the recent horrific attack in North Belfast. We utterly condemn this brutal and unjustified violence, which has no place in our society.

Furthermore, we strongly condemn the unacceptable unrest and disorder unfolding on our streets tonight. We are issuing an urgent and clear appeal for calm. Resorting to violence and destroying our own communities serves absolutely no purpose; it only inflicts further trauma, fear and hardship on our families and neighbours.

The vehicles being targeted and destroyed tonight belong to people who work hard to earn a living, support their families and keep our communities moving. These cars and vans provide vital transport that residents rely on every single day for their livelihoods, medical appointments and daily routines. Burning cars and destroying property does not protect anyone, it directly harms working people and cripples the infrastructure our neighbourhoods depend on.

We are deeply disturbed by the deliberate weaponisation of recent tragedies by those seeking to advance racist agendas and incite hatred against people of colour. Exploiting tension to sow division is a calculated tactic that endangers everyone, particularly our children and young people. When chaos and fear are allowed to take root on our streets, vulnerable young people become prime targets for manipulation and can be easily drawn into cycles of hostility and extremism.
Northern Ireland’s growing diversity is a profound strength, not a threat. The variety of cultures, perspectives and skills enriching our society are vital to our collective future and we must fiercely protect all communities that call this place home.

As the regional support and headquarter body for community based youth work, Youth Work Alliance is resolute in our commitment to rights-based youth work. We stand firmly behind the frontline youth workers who aim to navigate these complex challenges and work to de-escalate tensions with Young people.

Through trauma-informed and relational methodologies, our sector works daily to dismantle prejudice, build empathy, and equip young people with the critical thinking needed to reject hateful narratives and destructive behaviour.

We cannot allow our young people to be used as pawns by those who wish to divide us, nor can we stand by as their futures and communities are jeopardised by street violence. Now is the time to step back, restore calm and robustly support the youth services that provide safe, inclusive and empowering spaces for all young people to thrive.

We stand united against violence, racism, and intimidation in all its forms.

John Lynch
Chief Executive Officer, Youth Work Alliance

We are sure by now that the news has spread about the very sad passing of our former C.E.O. Stephen Cruise. We will be closed tomorrow to allow Jack and myself, along with the wider Oasis Caring in Action staff team to attend Stephen's funeral. Stephen was many things to many people...... at his heart he was an amazing ally to every single young person who came through our doors, from Team 2 all the way through! Our thoughts are with Karen, Nikki, John and the entire family circle at this very sad time. I think this picture speaks a 1000 words!
