If You Suspect Abuse, Don't Ignore It, Report It

As part of Safeguarding Adults Week, we're encouraging everyone to know what to do if they are worried that an adult or child may be at risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or harm.

You don't need proof to raise a concern. If something doesn't feel right, it's always better to speak up.

📞 In Wakefield, safeguarding concerns can be reported 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling Social Care Direct on 0345 8 503 503.

🚨 If someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.

If you're concerned about an adult at risk:
✔️ Call Social Care Direct on 0345 8 503 503
✔️ Email: [email protected]
If you're concerned about a child:
✔️ Call Social Care Direct on 0345 8 503 503
✔️ Concerns can also be reported through the Integrated Front Door and the Wakefield Council EHM Portal.

Remember:
• You can make a report even if you're unsure.
• You do not have to provide your personal details.
• Providing as much information as possible helps professionals investigate and provide support.

Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. By speaking up, you could help protect someone from harm and ensure they receive the support they need.

Would you know the signs that someone may need help?

Safeguarding can involve recognising and responding to concerns such as:
▪️ Physical abuse
▪️ Emotional abuse
▪️ Financial abuse
▪️ Neglect
▪️ Self-neglect
▪️ Domestic abuse
▪️ Exploitation

Our staff and volunteers receive safeguarding training to help them identify concerns and respond appropriately.

If something doesn't feel right, it's important to speak up. Early intervention can make a huge difference to someone's safety, wellbeing and quality of life.

Safeguarding means supporting people to live life on their terms.

Our Home Support Service works alongside individuals to help them remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes for as long as possible.

Safeguarding isn't about taking control away from people—it's about empowering them to make informed choices while providing the support they need to achieve their goals.

Whether we're assisting with personal care, medication support, rehabilitation, meal preparation or simply providing reassurance, our focus is always on promoting independence, dignity and wellbeing.

Every visit is an opportunity to build trust, notice changes in wellbeing and ensure people receive the support they need.

Did you know that safeguarding also means tackling loneliness and social isolation?

For many older adults, loneliness can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. It can increase vulnerability, reduce confidence and make it harder for people to access support when they need it.

Through our community activities, friendship groups, wellbeing services and volunteer-led projects, we help people build meaningful connections and remain active members of their communities.

Sometimes safeguarding starts with something as simple as a conversation over a cup of tea, a friendly phone call, or helping someone reconnect with activities they enjoy.

Together, we can create communities where everyone feels valued, connected and supported.
Because everyone deserves to feel they belong.
