Carsphairn Heritage Initiative

Carsphairn Heritage Initiative Carsphairn Heritage Initiative (SC049987) looks after the Carsphairn Archive. Ancestry records are available for family history researchers.

The seeds of Carsphairn Heritage Group were sown in 1982 with an exhibition of local interest in the Village Hall. The Group was formed in 1987 as a Scottish Charity and since then it has amassed a collection of family history records, photographs and slides as well as numerous items of local interest. A Heritage Centre was built in 1992 and was run by the Heritage Group which consisted of local r

esidents and others further afield who were interested in the history of this small community. Members of the Group pay a small subscription annually and receive a quarterly newsletter which reflects the abundance of local history in the area. At its Annual General Meeting in November 2019 and in order to pursue ambitious future projects, Carsphairn Heritage Group took the decision to become an Incorporated Scottish Registered Charity. This application to the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) was approved on 28 February 2020 and Carsphairn Heritage Initiative was born. The new charity replaces Carsphairn Heritage Group and all assets have been transferred. Carsphairn Heritage Initiative are dedicated in continuing the valuable work carried out by the former charity and although nothing will drastically change we are hopeful that the new legal status of the charity will have a positive and beneficial impact on the work that we do; collating and preserving local heritage information and items of local interest and educating all those interested in the social culture and history of Carsphairn and it's immediate surroundings. Carsphairn Heritage Initiative relies on donations and membership subscriptions. Please offer your support - Thank you! For more information, please visit our webpages.

A quick stop in the Biosphere Community of Carsphairn to talk about outdoor interpretation in the village which will explain more about the UNESCO Biosphere designation and Carsphairn's place on Scotland's UNESCO Trail. We're grateful to the Community Council and Carsphairn Heritage Initiative for sharing their knowledge and resources. The Carsphairn Archive is an absolutely stupendous work by volunteers spanning 30 yrs of recording, analysing and publishing donated items and cannot be beaten for a deep dive into SW Scotland's rural history: https://www.carsphairn.org/CarsphairnArchive/

There was a very well presented report on the findings of our 'Stroanfreggan Community Archaeological Research Project' which took place on Wednesday evening. The renowned Scottish hill fort expert, Cathy McIver from AOC Archaeology presented the well attended talk, along with our very own fount of knowledge, Michael Ansell. A published report will be circulated to all our members in the near future, also another update in Spring when we get back the carbon dating results. The Heritage Centre in Carsphairn will host a static exhibition all about this exciting venture during 2026.
