Since June 2022, Castle Douglas Development Forum has helped maintain the perennial planting beds at the top of the town after council support for traditional bedding schemes was withdrawn. Over the last two years we have funded a gardener, plants and bulbs through the Town Charity Shop income, as volunteers unfortunately did not come forward in sufficient numbers to sustain the work. Earlier this spring, our gardener became seriously unwell just as the seasonal tidy-up was due to begin. We informed the Community Council of the situation and explained CDDF’s limited staff and volunteer capacity. At the same time, increasing pressure to return the area to closely mown grass and more traditional maintenance standards placed us in a difficult position. CDDF’s environmental and sustainability policies support lower-mow approaches, perennial planting and biodiversity-led management, which are now widely recognised across the UK as better for pollinators, climate resilience and long-term sustainability. As a result, we took the decision to withdraw from managing the flower beds going forward. We remain proud of the work done by volunteers to try to introduce a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to civic planting in the town. Here are some photos of the perennial planting day where the council's then head gardener helped us and the council provided the plants. Also some of the rich meadow flowers (should have photographed the four types of flower heads of grasses too) which were starting to return to the roundabout. fans
