🚂 ALL ABOARD!

Have you visited the lovely new (very Old) Good Thing at Castle Cary Station?

After a major heritage restoration, the doors are open again to our historic ticket office and waiting room, with the station’s early 20th-century Great Western Railway character brought beautifully back to life.

DID YOU KNOW? More than 370,000 passengers pass through Castle Cary Station each year - making our little station a pretty important gateway to this corner of the country.

And now there’s plenty worth looking at while you wait for your train. The restoration includes reproductions of original Great Western Railway benches and historic colour schemes, alongside original features uncovered during the work, including fireplaces, skirting, dado rails and cornices.

The original station entrance is back in use too, with a new accessible ramp; the ticket office has been moved to create a better flow through the building; and there’s much more seating, a new departure board and improved bathroom facilities.

It’s a gorgeous bit of railway nostalgia, but importantly it’s not just about looking backwards. Castle Cary trains connect us directly with London, Exeter, Bristol and Weymouth, and our station famously becomes the gateway to Glastonbury Festival each summer. It’s even hosted Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Train!

And with the new 567 bus now connecting the station with Castle Cary town, Glastonbury and Street too, our local transport hub is having quite the moment.

So next time you’re catching a train, leave yourself an extra five minutes and have a proper look around. Even the dog was impressed!

Tickets please! 🚂

******It is with regret that at this late stage this event has been cancelled due to the forecast of persistent rain and wind tomorrow. We do apologise to all who made plans to attend, it wasn’t an easy decision. It is possible to scythe in the rain but playing and picnicking wouldn’t be safe ******

Play in The Hay day, this coming Saturday, at the Moat Garden in Castle Cary (behind the George Inn) from 11am. Free family event with children’s activities, music and scything talk and demonstration. Please bring a picnic or grab something in town.
