If you went to the fabulous Green Scythe Fair at the weekend and are inspired to learn how to mow using this most sustainable and environmentally friendly method, then we have just the course for you.

This Friday (19th June) and the following Friday (26th), we are running a two-day Scything course. We will show you how to set up your scythe, how to maintain it and various scything techniques. The course will also cover the environmental benefits of meadow management.

The course is funded for anyone over 19, living in Somerset and earning less than £22,570 or with a health or wellbeing need.

Please contact us to book. [email protected]

Adrian found these Small Eggar moth caterpillars on their nursery web, in a hawthorn bush upon the landfill cap.

The moths are rather cute - just look at their furry feet.

If you are heading to the Green Scythe Fair on Sunday here's a handy list of some useful items to take with you. Look out for Neil, he is helping to organise the event and will be there with our learners who are brilliant at Scything.

This is a magical one day environmental fair in a beautiful setting on the Somerset Levels run entirely by volunteers using wind, sun and muscle power. Excellent live music, over 100 stalls displaying traditional skills, crafts and produce, lively environmental debates, delicious organic local food, a variety of the best ales and ciders and a large kids area with activities throughout the day.

Today, we have had the pleasure of hosting Hinton St George primary school’s KS2 classes for ‘Day at the Dump’!

During their trip, they visited our waste tunnel, capped landfill, compost pad and even the waste transfer station - as you can see in the photo!

Years 5 and 6 took part in a Waste Odyssey workshop, learning about the long term impacts of landfill, while Years 3 and 4 got crafty and made kites out of bread bags. What a brilliant day!

At this time of year the mump is a picture of colour, with many different species of wild flowers embracing it's contours.

Two species of orchids make an appearance every year. The pyramid orchid and the bee orchid.

The bee orchid has evolved mimicking a certain species of female bumblebee, as the male bee is fooled to mate this flower, thinking it is a female in waiting his attentions, pollen is transferred to his torso.

Unfortunately this specific species of bumblebee does not live in the UK, so the bee orchids here have to self pollinate.

Thanks to Adrian for the brilliant photos and the write up.
