The 3R Foundation recently awarded £1,000 to Skerton Ward Allotment Association towards the cost of a new storage unit.

Skerton Ward Allotment Association provides a welcoming and peaceful environment for a diverse range of people from the local community. Many members are retired and enjoy the opportunity to socialise, stay active and grow their own produce, while others work in demanding professions such as the NHS and Prison Service and value the allotment as a place to relax and unwind.

The site also supports wider community involvement. Local Scouts visit to learn about nature and food growing, nearby residents take part in environmental projects, and the association’s annual plant sale has become a popular event for local gardeners.

The grant contributed towards the purchase of a new storage unit, replacing an ageing container that had deteriorated significantly over the years. The old structure suffered from leaks, corrosion and structural issues, making it increasingly unsuitable for storing equipment and essential infrastructure.

The new unit provides secure, weatherproof storage for tools and equipment used by members free of charge, as well as housing the allotment’s security camera, Wi-Fi and battery charging systems. This investment has helped safeguard valuable resources and supports the continued development of this much-loved community space.

The 3R Foundation funds grants like this through the Recycle, Reuse, Rehome charity shop in Carnforth (next to Tesco). With a large number of grant applications coming in recently, continued support from the local community is more important than ever.

Every purchase in the shop helps raise the funds that go straight back out as grants to support local charities, clubs and community groups. If you are nearby, please call in and support the shop so we can continue helping even more organisations across our area.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £400 to Lunesdale Project Linus UK Group for quilting materials, labels and packaging supplies.

Project Linus UK provides comfort, warmth and reassurance to children who are sick, disabled, disadvantaged or experiencing difficult circumstances. Through a network of dedicated volunteers, the charity creates and donates new, handmade, washable quilts and blankets to children who need them most.

The Lunesdale group covers North Lancashire and supplies quilts to organisations including local hospices, children's hospital wards, women's refuges, special schools and Unique Kidz & Co.

The grant funded essential materials including fabric, fleece and thread, enabling volunteers to continue making quilts for local children. Funding also provided labels, information cards, leaflets and protective packaging to ensure each quilt is presented safely and professionally before being distributed.

Every quilt is lovingly handmade by volunteers and given free of charge, providing not only practical comfort but also a powerful reminder that someone cares. The funding has helped ensure the group can continue creating and distributing these special gifts to children across the region.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £350 to The Olive Branch for a washer/dryer for their Lancaster drop-in centre.

The Olive Branch supports people experiencing hardship caused by issues such as addiction, debt, poverty, homelessness, ill health, loneliness, job loss and relationship breakdown. They also provide support for asylum seekers and refugees, offering a welcoming and compassionate environment where people can access practical help and support.

Alongside hospitality, advice and referrals to other organisations, the charity runs a food bank and provides essential items including toiletries, sleeping bags, tents, hats and gloves.

Their drop-in centre also includes shower facilities, which are increasingly being used by homeless guests. The secure and private facilities are particularly valued by women accessing support.

The grant funded a washer/dryer, helping staff and volunteers keep towels clean and ready for use. Previously, the charity had relied on supporters taking towels home to wash, which sometimes led to shortages and meant guests could not always access the shower facilities when needed.

Having laundry facilities on site has helped ensure the centre can continue offering a safe, dignified and reliable service for vulnerable members of the community.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £100 to Caton Church Scouts for a gas stove for camping.

Caton Church Scouts, based in Caton and Brookhouse, provides outdoor experiences and residential camping opportunities for local young people through its Beaver, Cub and Scout groups. The group currently supports around 60 members aged 6 to 14, giving them the chance to develop practical, social and emotional skills through adventurous activities and time spent outdoors.

Camping and overnight stays are a key part of the Scouting experience, helping young people build confidence, teamwork and independence while enjoying the outdoors with their peers.

The grant funded a gas stove to support cooking activities during camps and residential trips. Preparing and sharing meals together is an important part of camp life, helping young people develop communication, problem-solving and life skills while learning about healthy eating.

The additional equipment means more young people can now take part in food preparation and cooking activities together, while also helping reduce costs for families by providing shared cooking facilities and equipment.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £730 to Lancaster Cricket Club for a remembrance bench, flagstones and foundation materials.

Lancaster Cricket Club runs multiple senior teams alongside a thriving junior section, offering coaching and opportunities for players from the age of five upwards. In recent years the club has also expanded opportunities for women and girls, while continuing to play an important role in the local community through events, school programmes and fundraising activities.

The club’s facilities are used not only by players, but also by families, supporters and local groups, making it a valued community hub where people come together through sport and social activities.

The grant supported the creation of a memorial area in honour of a much-loved club member who sadly passed away from cancer. He had played a huge role in supporting the club through difficult times and was greatly respected by members and volunteers alike.

Funding helped purchase a remembrance bench, paving materials and foundations, allowing volunteers to create a peaceful space where people can sit, reflect and remember. The memorial area stands as a lasting tribute while also providing an attractive feature within the club grounds for the wider community to enjoy.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £270 to the Morecambe Winter Gardens Preservation Trust Ltd for a new hot water boiler for the café.

The Morecambe Winter Gardens Preservation Trust is a volunteer-led charity working to restore the town’s historic Grade II Victorian theatre to its former glory. Alongside restoration work, volunteers help operate events, guided tours and run the on-site café, which welcomes visitors throughout the year.

The theatre has become an important community and cultural venue, with volunteers playing a vital role in keeping the building active and accessible while long-term restoration continues.

The grant funded a replacement hot water boiler for the café after the existing unit began struggling to cope with demand during busy weekend events and had started to leak. Reliable hot water is essential for the smooth running of the café and supporting visitors attending events and activities at the theatre.

The new boiler has helped improve facilities for volunteers, visitors and customers, supporting the continued operation of this much-loved local landmark.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £978 to Carnforth & District Crown Green Bowling Club for an AED (defibrillator).

Carnforth & District Crown Green Bowling Club provides opportunities for gentle exercise, social interaction and competitive sport for people across the local community. The club welcomes a wide age range of members, from around 50 to 95 years old, and also hosts visits from local schools each year.

As well as promoting physical activity, the club offers an important social space where people can stay connected, active and involved in the community.

The grant funded the purchase of a defibrillator, ensuring vital emergency equipment is available on site in the event of a serious medical incident. The club recognised the importance of being prepared after experiencing the impact of cardiac emergencies within the wider bowling community.

Having an accessible AED on site provides reassurance for members, visitors and spectators, while helping improve safety for everyone using the facilities.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £324 to Branksome Good Neighbours in Morecambe for two large gazebos.

Branksome Good Neighbours is a community-led residents’ association in Morecambe, supported by Lancaster City Council’s Community Engagement Team. Since forming in 2022, the group has organised a wide range of activities aimed at bringing local residents together and strengthening community spirit.

Their activities include free weekly coffee mornings, fundraising events, family fun days and community litter picks. For many residents, especially those who may otherwise feel isolated, these gatherings provide an important opportunity to socialise and connect with others.

One of the biggest challenges facing the group has been the lack of a dedicated community centre on the Branksome Estate. Despite this, volunteers successfully organised events including a Halloween celebration and Santa’s grotto using a resident’s garden and a small gazebo.

The grant funded two larger gazebos with side panels, helping the group create flexible outdoor community spaces that can be used in different weather conditions. The new equipment has made it much easier for volunteers to organise events without the ongoing cost of hiring venues.

The gazebos will support future activities including Easter events, summer fun days, holiday play schemes and Christmas celebrations, helping bring the local community together throughout the year.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £356 to Slyne with Hest Bowling Club for energy-efficient floodlight lamps.

Slyne with Hest Bowling Club is an inclusive community club run by a dedicated team of volunteers who help maintain a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities. The club offers opportunities for both social bowling and competitive play, while also providing an important space for local people to meet, stay active and connect with others.

The club’s floodlights were nearing the end of their lifespan and needed replacing. To improve efficiency and reduce energy use, the grant funded new energy-efficient lamps, helping modernise the club’s facilities and reduce ongoing running costs.

The improved lighting has helped ensure the club can continue offering safe and welcoming evening activities for members and visitors alike, while supporting the long-term sustainability of the club.

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £492 to the Four Seasons Allotments Association for a wheelchair-accessible picnic table.

Based in Heysham, Four Seasons Allotments Association is a community growing project providing full and half-size plots, along with communal growing beds, for a diverse range of local households. The group is committed to environmental stewardship, sharing knowledge around food growing and ensuring that gardening opportunities are accessible to everyone.

The association has worked to create an inclusive space where people of all abilities can take part, socialise and enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity and community growing.

The grant funded a wheelchair-accessible picnic table, along with groundwork preparation to ensure the area could be safely accessed. The table forms part of a wider communal seating area designed to encourage people to spend more time on site, build friendships and strengthen the sense of community within the allotments.

By improving accessibility, the project has helped ensure more people can fully enjoy the site and take part in activities regardless of physical ability or mobility needs.
